These are true heritage birds, they are extremely hardy, to disease, the elements and excellent foragers.Hello:
I've looked at Javas for several years, and I'm not crazy about black chickens, BUT that being said, Javas seem to have such a shine to them that they are beautiful black colored.
Can you please give me more information on them? Do the roos get mean as they get older? Do the set well? Are they insistent setters?
I have some predatory birds in the area. Can they withstand that pressure?
Thanks.
So far, it is reported back 10 years that out of thousands hatched, only 1 cockerel was ever "man agressive" and that being passive agressive, he would not chase you down, but if you walked into a corner he was in, he got upset.
That said, that bird was culled immediately.
Mine are cautious, friendly, some are 'talker' and some are a bit distant, none are mean.
Out of the flock I have breeding now, so far 1 has gone broody, which is fine, just one.
They are excellent dedicated Mothers, and from what I have been told by others, Cocks do not harm chicks, they protect them.
I have my broodies in a seperate coop...
As far as predator birds, we have a Bald Eagle pair nesting a half mile away, and lots of assorted hawks.
These birds watch the sky & sound the alarm if they see a raptor...oddly enough, if they see a turkey vulture they go on about their business...it is odd but I guess it is ingrained in them what IS and is NOT a predator.
Have you noticed how the cockerels have different hackle than other birds ?
They are beautiful......
Hope this helps !
