Black labs and chickens don't mix

No, had not thought of trapping them. They are huge dogs. I just do not want to know what happens when the chickens are not anymore fun but the little tiny baby goats and mini foals are a good treat! If it came to it, those dogs would be eliminated by drive by if they touch my horses! This picture is of the bigger of the two. He has to weigh close to 120 if not more!

I am a dog lover, but labs are hunters by nature and will hunt and kill, period. I had a lab until a few weeks ago and she killed dd's kitten. She knew she'd done wrong but I honestly don't think she could have stopped if she wanted. We gave her away the next day; killing the kitten and then knowing we would be putting chickens in her reach in a few weeks, just left us no choice.

I'm not sure if it's more humane, but my dad use to shoot strays with a bb gun. Wouldn't kill, but would greatly deter them from coming back.

Good luck!

What's the difference between chickens and goats? Tell the neighbor it has to end now or else. It's too bad people have to be that way. You have got to get along with your neighbors, bu it's a two-way street. I would shoot the dogs when caught in the act and call the neighbor to come get the carcasses out of your yard.

The need to die via a sudden case of lead poisoning. I love animals but once they get the taste of blood there is nothing you can do to keep them from trying again.

I don't know anyone that enjoys shooting a dog and I hope I never meet anyone that does. However, enough is enough and you need to protect your chickens. I have shot and killed a few dogs in my lifetime, not a pleasant deed, but sometimes you have to do it.

Good luck and best wishes.

Just a kind of funny thought. My father has a Eastern European friend that say the locals where he is from have a special way of dealing with chicken killing dogs. He says catch the dog and put it in a gunny sack with a chicken. Then beat the hell out of the bag with a stick. When the dog comes out, Whala! he thinks all chickens are Ninjas. Says the dog will from then on run from the chickens from then on.

That would be one big gunny sack for those dogs.

The electric fence would be cheap and easy. A single wire near the ground to prevent digging, a wire about chest high on the dogs and if you want, one about a foot above that to prevent jumping up on the chicken pen. Dogs really respect a jolt of electricity! They remember too.

I used one strand at 4" from the ground to keep my husky from digging out from the fenced yard, a 4' chainlinck fence, left loose on top to keep her from jumping out. Took her 10 seconds to dig a hole and slide out under the fencing, I stood in the livingroom with a stopwatch one day. After I installed the electric fence, she would actually lay down on the electirc fence wire with her thick fur, but as soon as her paws hit the wire when she was digging ... yelp!

If you are uncomfortable shooting the dog (it's not the dog's fault it isn't properly trained), try a high powered BB gun. It might make them think twice. Of course, if they've decided that killing chickens is fun, you might not have a choice. Stupid irresponsible dog owners.
