Good morning BYCers. I am hoping that I put this in the correct forum. I am a new chicken owner. Adopted 4 two year old hens a couple of months ago. Fell in love with one of the particular breeds and with living in the city and NOT WANTING ROOS the black sex link was very attractive to is when we bought chicks. My chicks are 4 weeks old today. All along one has been significantly larger than the other 3, and this morning when I went to the garage to feed and water them I noticed that the three smaller girls are all getting the red collar feathers that the black sex links have. My bigger "girl" is solid black, and her tail is double the length of the other 3. Any ideas on if she would still be a black sex link or did the hatchery or feed store get my chick mixed up?

Can you post pictures of them? Did they all look the same when you got them?

It is very likely that the store you got them from "mixed them up." About half of mine are not what I was told they were. I even got a black sex-link cockerel, which seems pretty difficult to mix up in my opinion. If you can post pics that would be helpful!

Yes, they were all identical until they were about a week old and "Nugget" all of a sudden started passing everyone up in size and feather growth. In these 2 pictures "Nugget" ( the chick in question) is closest to me and you can see the red chests on the two young ladies behind "her".

Just posted in your other thread -

I see nothing particularly roo-ish at all in this bird based on these pictures (but it is still early). The larger tail is actually not a "bad" sign as in chicks the male chicks tend to develop their tails (and other feathers) more slowly than females - they end up bigger (the tails) in the end, but start out slower.
