So I'm getting my very first chickens today! 2 egg laying black sex link hens and a Rhode island red rooster. From what I understand, they shouldn't be bred together, is this correct? Does that mean I need to keep them separate even if I don't intend to breed them together? I do intend to get some 'pure' chicks to raise and eventually breed with the RIR, if that makes any difference. (Total newbie here so please don't laugh at me too much 😂)

You can never keep one chicken by themselves, however if you keep a rooster with just 2 hens it will cause too much mating, it will be very stressful and could even cause injuries to the hens. I reccomend getting more hens or giving back the rooster.
