I wasn't sure whether to post here or in 'egglaying', but here goes.

I'm pretty sure it's my cuckoo marans, she started laying a few days ago, the first egg had a very small blood smear on it, the second looked like a speckled egg, but on closer inspection the speckles were blood.

Today her egg had a smallish blood smear on it, buth there were fresh (but frozen) blood drops in and around the nest box and another little pile of fresh/frozen blood drops a few feet away on the floor litter.

Is this common? Will she be ok? Can I do anything for her? She looks comfortable and I can't see any external trauma.

After loosing Babatte (black marans) to prolapse a couple of weeks ago I'm really nervous.

Mine occasionally have a blood smeared egg. Just not all the time. I wonder too. Should I be overly concerned? I hope your's will be all right Tiempo. Hopefully someone will have more knowledge on this issue.

Its not uncommon for a new layer to have blood smears on the egg. You might want to watch her for prolaps. A few of my hens are 2 and 3 yrs old, and I still occasionally get a blood smear. Not a big deal..just something to watch for.
