*GRUESOME PHOTO WARNING*

I need help :( my sweet girl is experiencing what I believe to be some kind of vent prolapse but I’m not sure the cause. I’m doing Epsom baths and electrolytes in her water. I haven’t fed her in 24 hours because I saw some people say to not do food and let her body rest for a little. She’s separate in the dark garage and trying to give her minimal stress. She did drink a decent amount of the water today and for the most part is acting ok. Definitely showing signs of straining and ruffled feathers. Not able to really poop, just some bloody white-ish brown-ish watery amount at times of the prolapse.

I can’t attach the video but one of the photos you can see it protruding out. It’s dark blood and very large compared to other photos I’ve seen on the internet. There also is a soft squishy part under her vent.

I don’t think she’s egg bound as I’ve checked a few times however I’m not sure if she’s been laying. I have several chickens and it’s hard to tell when the last time she laid was. I’m also thinking this could be vent gleet along with the prolapse?

Let me know your thoughts and any advice :(

Hi, I just had a similar situation.

I gave my girl Lilly calcium citrate with vitamin D for several days to help with muscle contractions.

Then I gloved up and used a giant blob of 1% cortisone ointment to help with swelling and I gently pushed the prolapse back in place with my finger, leaving the cortisone ointment inside.

Lilly also had horrible diarrhea. After a few days of bathing and blow drying and repositioning the vent I gave her a tiny bit of an immodium tablet.

That was enough to calm the diarrhea and her vent gradually stayed more in than out. She is fine now.

I did not research whether cortisine or immodium would be bad for Lilly but she did fine and at the point we were at I just needed something to work.

I have also heard that hemorrhoid ointment can be used to reduce the swelling in a vent prolapse situation.

you can rub some honey on the bloody swollen part, it sooths it and could help it get unswollen. also you can mix some parsley and oregano in with her food (if she'll eat) and to prevent any other chickens from getting prolapses you can add some apple cider vinegar in their water
