Blood in rooster's semen?

Quote:
Those girls are tougher then you think.. I definitly would keep trying ... Putting him in a seperate enclosure right up against the girls fence for a while may help... Heck my girls were scared of the big bad sheet I put over their run to shade them... Took them almost a week to come out of there coop... They will get used to him...

Im not giving up but I have to wait until I have more hens. I have 3 peepers that are 9 weeks old, two of which might be hens. Mama is hatching 3 more peeps this weekend Im pretty sure. As soon as I have some hen in my flock I will try that. He has been penned with just babies since they are able to sneak into his side through cracks in the wire somehow, and he not hurt them. They are just a little freaked out when I come home and release them. (they get in his side but can figure out how to get back into the other side I guess)

Well you are half way there, just collect and AI you some hens. Would be easy to get chicks from him.
He would be easy to AI from, collect is the harder part of AI.

inseminate only a hen that is laying, and has not been with another rooster for 3 weeks.
The semen is good for about an hour, after inseminate the hen will be fertile for about a week, so need to inseminate the hen,or hens every 5 days.

This is not that odd with birds that are imprint to humans. Seen this in Hand raised birds. Cockatiels, pigeons, and doves have seen all 3 that would mate with their owners hand. Mostly males ,but also females.

In the case of a female pigeon , a friend had one that would go to nest and lay her 2 eggs after mating with his hand.

Oh thank you thank you for the encouragement and information. I share my results with the forum members if I am successful!
Boy did this thread take an unexpected turn... I feel like I should change the title but I dont know how

Robin,
You must understand that chicken mating is not a gentle affair. My Rooster violently grabs his hens by the back of the neck and forces them down. If they were humans he would be in jail! It's just the way it is.
Don't be afraid. Put some hens in with him and let them scuffle. I garuntee he will not kill them and they will not drop dead from fright. They will be dominated like a normal rooster does. It might look really mean to you but they are tough stuff. I have seen my hens fight NASTY to the point where I thought there would be injuries for me to tend to, but there was nothing. Just alot of noise and feather pulling.

Whoever said this was not an appropriate discussion for BYC, well

Come on now. Perhaps it's a sensitve topic and if it bothers you, don't read it.
My kids (3 ,7, 8) have seen more animals mating and are very mature and matter of fact about the whole process. To them it's simply "making babies" and that's it, they don't give it a further thought.
I do think the breeding and anatomical matters of chickens belong here as this is a chicken forum. It would be okay for someone to discuss AI but not this? What is the difference?
