Blood Test Results Pg 7 11/12 Lilly R.I.P.

Thank you Patch. Ruth, we are so sorry to hear about your kitty. we are doing okay.

I just called my nephew in Florida to tell him about Lilly because he picked Lilly out before they arrived to be "his". He gets email updates and her pictures and such...he was very upset too and hopes the other girls do not get sick.

This has just been really hard for us. I do not think unless you have a chicken and raise it from newly hatched to adulthood, that you can understand how attached you can get. the other girls have spent the day acting like they are looking for her, especially when I go down to the coop. They all run out and look expectantly at me. Probably because I was the one who carried her away yesterday and her being hen honcho has them all at a loss.

*sigh* she is really missed around here.

Fecal Float Test Results:

This will cause you to say what?

The results were clear negative for any type of worms or toxicity. He checked it twice after hearing she had died. Notta clean.

So now I sit and say WT ??????

I am waiting for Dr. Robbison to arrive to look at her and so forth so, I will update when I know something else.

Here is the update from the vet...Dr. Robinson.

First, he went by Dr. Joe's clinic on the way here to examine the stool sample I had dropped off. He concurred there were no parasites in Lilly's stool.

He examined her body and saw nothing out of sorts. he said she was a little trim but not skinny or sickly, no eggs in the shoot or in the abdomen that could be noted, examined my other girls and looked at their environment. He is 99.9% sure this is an isolated incident and that Lilly was probably suffering some heart defect because of our description of how she died, he believes she was in cardiac failure.

[EDIT: he also suggested the possibility of intestinal twisting]

He is ordering poultry wormer for me to give all the girls as the ivermectin he had on hand is far to strong for my younger ones and it would be hard to syringe dose such a small dosage to be safe for them.

He did offer a necropsy but said it would really be wasting my money and if by some fluke that I had another chicken get ill, he would feel okay to do one and charge me for that then.

He also told me that feeding the flax seeds mixed with the food is not a problem and his get fed them also. Cyanide poisoning is most often in cattle, pigs and such and when it is from flax, it is from flax that is grown in water stressed areas and it is in high concentrations in the stem not the seed. he said it was great for their feathers and was known to promote easier molting. So, he recommended that I continue giving my girls 1 lb of whole flax seeds per 25lbs of food because my girls are healthy and have beautiful healthy looking plummage.

He also stated that if I had read anything different regarding flax seeds not flax itself, that he would be interested in reading that information himself and researching the matter further.

He also told me that healthy chickens rarely get scared to death...turkey yes but chickens nope. He said normally the chicken is already sick or it dies from shock.

So, end result...highly probable that Lilly had a bad ticker and went into arrest or was startled and went into failure. He will be worming my flock because he said as Pets they should be given extra precaution to ease my mind, Cheyenne's mind and my husband's grief in dealing with the two of us. LOL

So, tomorrow we clean the run and everything out and make sure there is no more discolored poo coming and if so, collect it and get it to him asap for a fecal float on it. Meanwhile, continue spoiling them at my leisure.

He got a kick out of my little roo who, not knowing who he was, fluffed all up and let a menacing growl sound out at the vet. The vet chuckled and turned to Deville and said "I am not here for your women so zip it young man". LOL I almost fell over.

thought I would let everyone know what was going on. Tomorrow I will bury Lilly in a pretty place here on the property.

Awwww mine too. Not to mention her holding Lilly asking me to stop her from dying. Gawd my heart was in my throat. I did not mean to invoke those emotions but she was holding Lilly while I was trying to get the pics to post on here.

geez. this is so sad. i think i've lost so many chickens over the years i get a bit "hardened", i am sorry to say. it is nice to see that bird that was so loved. lucky for you all that you have such a nice vet. bury her in a nice place and make a headstone for her. we have few homemade headstones for our lost birds. it's nice to have as a memorial.take care.
