Blooie's Blankie Fort

I had no idea that elevation made that much difference. A lot of times, if I personally get eggs that have detached air cells, I won't turn them for the first 7-9 days. They tend to do better. Then I will hatch them sitting up in egg cartons.

Blooie, I'm so sorry the Post Office was so rough on your boxes!

Oh, Alex, don't worry about anything! You know me - if this is the worst thing that ever happens in my lifetime I've got it made!! I didn't know about altitude differences either (to tell you the truth, I totally missed the post with the original question!) so whether that has anything to do with it or not I don't know. I can't be the only mountain area person who's had shipped eggs, but I've never seen anything about it before so who knows?

I don't know that one
YAK = You ain't kiddin'!!

Blooie, FridayYet deals with altitude problems allot with eggs she receives shipped.....you may pm her for some advice next time.

however, if I remember correctly, the prognosis for them is usually not very good. But I think she's pretty high. (altitude wise)

Thanks, Amy. I guess I'd better go read that. I don't usually consider us "high altitude" here. We are in a Basin between mountain ranges...from my front kitchen window I see the Big Horns, from the side kitchen window I have the Pryors, and out the bedroom window are the Beartooth/Absarokas. If you look at a map of Wyoming, in the northwest you'll see what looks like a lima bean or a thumbprint - that's the Big Horn Basin. Sheridan is over the mountain to our east, Billings, Mt. is north of us, and Yellowstone (west) and Cody(southwest) complete the bean.
Despite the mountains around us, Cowley is only at about 3900 + change, not even 4,000. I don't even change to the high altitude directions in recipes. So I don't know that we'd be affected that badly here with altitude issues in the eggs, but I suppose all things are possible. It's sure something to look into!

The newest eggs being shipped left Colorado and are right now sitting in Cheyenne, Wyoming. So they should be here tomorrow, and shouldn't have any altitude adjustments at all.

Still getting hang of this site...love it to pieces! I spent all my free time researching today, and emailing a few breeders. Also discovered that there's a Heritage Poultry Preservation Center next town over! Woot! I am driving on over to the Cooperative Center tomorrow to pick up paperwork to review to see if 4 H is going to be appropriate.

I have been learning a lot, and it seems ( I could be wrong) that some of the breeders/ showers are either really friendly, or really not? I was kind of just scanning breeders posts and it became kind of snippy in some, but I guess that's just people. No wonder I like chickens......

Anyway; making me reconsider the show aspect, and maybe just sticking with pet and care therapy part. I just want this to be a positive experience for these kids. How do you pm people on here? Totally hijacking this thread. Sorry guys!
