Blowing your nose in class - rude or acceptable?

As a teacher, its a problem. Students can't hear the lecture and its disruptive, because students easily get off track. Generally, we prefer they mop up with a kleenex, then excuse themselves out into the hall or bathroom to blow - then wash their hands before returning, if possible.

I've asked students to leave if they are just too sick to stay. There's great products on the market to control the worst of the symptoms and oddly enough, discussing them turned out to be a rousing class.

This teacher's rule of snot:
6th graders: Don't sit there and constantly and loudly sniff it back up, blow your darn nose. It kills me how a kid can loudly snort it back up with no problem but have to delicately blow their nose is such a way it does no good. If you are sick stay home.
Adult students: Don't sit there and constantly and loudly sniff it back up, step out, blow your nose and come back. I'd rather have the door open and close a few times than a symphony of snot in the class. If you are too sick, don't come. If you have bad allergies, take your meds.

I read this whilst having a horrible cold. Totally ruined my social life this week because I don't want to sit in a friend's house sniffing & blowing all night. I'm dripping like a tap though (pure water) so blowing doesn't do a thing, I just have to dab.

I want to emphasize that this is not a quick blow to get some clearance, but several loud successive blows to totally open the passage way.

I guess I've always been the kind of person to dab for 40 minutes rather than disrupt everyone's lecture with a hardy "thar she blows!!"

Definitely rude IMO.

I've never blown my nose in public. Not ever. If I'm having a problem, I grab a tissue and excuse myself.

These are the only things my mom was really strict about growing up... Don't chew with your mouth open, don't drink with your mouth full, don't burp loudly, go to the bathroom if you're having gas issues, don't pick your nose, and don't blow your nose anywhere someone else would have to see or hear you. I add, Please wash your hands when you're done and dispose of your tissues in a sanitary way

This is aimed at not making everyone else around want to retch.

I'd find it a th ousand times more annoying if the person got up and left the room every time they blew their nose.

Why not ask the teacher if you can sit your recorder on his desk for the lecture? It will be a better recording anyway. I knew a ton of people in col who did this. In biology, it was normal to see a little row of recorders on the prof's desk.

Aye, leaving a college lecture is generally frowned upon if not outright disallowed by the prof.

An excellent idea!
