I haven't as of yet ran into any problems with breeding blue x blue. I have read in old papers and books on the breed, and there are people who have raised them for 50 years or longer and that is all they have done is blue x blue. If you look at the other breeds, and everyone who suggests to use black or splash, tell me, are there birds really the correct color? I have yet to see any breed have has true blue as an Andalusian. It is possible to breed towards well marked birds using what you have. It may take awhile though. Generally, I'd suggest finding a good laced male that had dark base color and cross to the hens that are marked like yours. This usually helps improve the lacing. But what are your goals? Just a pretty blue bird, or an Andalusian with proper type and color? If both type and color, you have your work cut out for you.

The goal is to help the kids learn and breed the birds towards the SOP. Do you have some books that you would recommend reading, as with helping the kids to understand we have to be able to explain the information at their level(which is 5th grade and 3rd grade)

Cochinman - very nice looking Andalusians. Would any of them have come from a guy that was up in VA - Christian D'Ortege (last name is not spelled right but it was French, sounding like DEE-OR-TAH-ZHAY) I think he had Spanish, Andalusians and some others maybe back in the 1970's and 80's. Up my way a long time ago was Art Phiel. All he ever did was Andalusians. PC

No, my birds originate from John Hayes (NY), some hatchery stock and I have a female from Matt Cauthorne (VA) that helped out with color.

Thanks. The John Hayes birds likely go back to Art Pfeil. Spelled his name right this time!.
I know Fred Zillich and D'Orgeix exchanged eggs on theirs for a time. There was some fellow in the Northwest that had good ones too but he was killed in a car accident I think and no telling where the birds went. PC

Tom, Matt Cauthorne got his start from Chris D'Orgeix. And as far as I know, Fred and Chris didn't exchange eggs, but Fred did get a bird off of Chris to help with the color on his as well. Plus Chris's birds came mostly from John Hayes. And if I'm not mistaken, some of Fred's birds may be traced back to Art Phiel's. So as you can see, everyone is related some how or another. That is why we are seeing the same faults in our birds.

I can't really think of any books that would help other than the standard of Perfection. there are some books written specifically on the Andalusian, but they aren't for children. If you want to look for them, they can be downloaded off of:

http://www.archive.org/details/americana

Just do a search for Andalusian fowl, or chicken or something and they should pop up. I wouldn't type in just Andalusian, or you'll get stuff about horses as well. There are actually 100's or 1000's of chicken and poultry books that can be downloaded. All old, and very informative. If I think of any books that your kids might like, I'll let you know.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the website and yes I noticed the information on the horses. We do have the 2001 SOP and generally I have been reading and trying to explain it to the kids- at least the older who is working the most with this breed.
