Blue Andalusian thread!

How is this one?

She looks pretty nice from what I can tell. A shot on her level would show her better. I can see that her tail is pinched but that's pretty common. You can breed to widen her back end if you're interested in a project. Find a male with a wide back end. Check between his pelvic bones and get the one with the most space, assuming you have a choice.

She appears to be a nice even shade of blue, like she should be. Nice lacing all over except her tail. I'm wondering if its just the lighting or what, but some of her feathers look green and others look purple/pink. Do you by chance have children playing with food coloring? Other than all that, it looks like you got a pretty good bird.

Good Morning!

I hope you dont mind I jump on here and ask if anyone close to PA will have chicks from good stock or hatching eggs available in the future? Must be NPIP PT & AI clean. Please message me with suggestions as I dont wish to mess up your conversations on the thread! Thank you!

I'm sad to say that Dino is no more.

This afternoon I was in the coop filling the feeder and checking the water, Dino was on the top perch with one of the bigger dorking roosters behind him. I saw Dino jump or get pushed off the roost out of the corner of my eye, and the dorking went right after him- Dino hit the floor and the dorking roo landed right on his neck. I heard the snap. A couple of quivers and he was dead, the dorking immediately attacked him again.

I took him out of the run and processed him. Kind of sad, he thought he was a super chicken, but in the end he was a soup chicken-

Yes, he had good taste. The legs were a bit chewy even after simmering for 2 hours, but it was all good.

After he was already simmering I found a web page on using surplus cockerals for food, it recommended holding processed birds in the refrigerator for 3 days minimum to increase tenderness. Another page recommends brining the bird overnight. I'll try these methods on the dorking culls.

This was the first chicken I ever processed.

I feel like Hannibal Lecter- "I'm having a friend for dinner"

The three days in the refrigerator is good .It helps to soak in brine for 24 hrs. You can also then soak for another 8 hrs. in ranch dressing.Nothing like a tender bird verses a tough one.

Hi,
I'm just starting my first flock. I love blue Andalusians but I have a few questions before I commit. We live in an area with high predator activity, especially coyotes, but everything really, right up to bears and mountain lions. I would like to let my birds free range in our fenced backyard area when they can be supervised, but they would need to be able to be trained to come back to the coop at random times. Also, I'm sure our 4-foot fence would be a joke to an Andalusian who wants to fly and explore. I'm worried what would happen to them in the woods. Are they the kind of chickens that would have a chance out there with all the other critters? Would love to have your opinions and experiences. Thanks!
