I still haven't attempted the ribbon and bead caps!

My girls aren't laying for beans right now and I'm afraid I will ruin the ones I started decorating, without having backup eggs. I refuse to convert store bought eggs into art...for now.

I got my Blas-fix egg blower this week. The best part about it is the tool they provide to make the hole. It's like a hand-held drill bit and gently files away the shell without cracking it. I have found that two things help immensely (whether using the Blas-fix or not):
#1: bringing the eggs to room temperature before blowing them and
#2 scrambling up the yolk with a toothpick prior to blowing.

With the Blas-fix you don't have to make two holes in the eggs but I do. I find that it is faster to clean out the eggs with a needle and syringe (w/ water and/or peroxide) than it is to load up the B-f, shoot it in and blow it out. That's just my preference.

I have only used it about a dozen or so times, but I'm finding that the B-f is very cheaply made and is beginning to come apart at the top seam. Obviously it will become useless at that point, but just something to be aware of (I'm trying to think of a way to patch it but I'm not sure superglue would do the trick).

Good luck & have fun!

I had the same problem. Loved how good it worked when it worked but then it wore out fast. Ordered another one! lol I love them, just wish they lasted longer.

I am soooo inspired by all the creativity you guys have... I've started...am in the process of...making some pretty 'holidegg-ornaments' of my own. Wonder if I'll finish the first one?
Just thought I'd throw my 2cents in regarding the head pounding process of blowing the eggs out (for those of us who haven't bought the cool little tool-thingy)...although I haven't decorated any eggs as potential ornaments I have blown them out quite a bit for other craft projects (Easter wreath with eggs hot-glued to a wreath covered with Spanish moss)...anyways, the best tool I've found is a jewelers small flat head screwdriver. I simply hold the egg in one hand and then sort of rub the screwdriver back and forth once or twice and then simply push it through the egg. Then I have a very small hole (and blew a few blood vessels thinking I could get the egg out if I kept the holes teensy...had to give in and take the screwdriver and carefully take off tiny pieces of the egg until I got the sized hole I wanted, big enough to easily blow the egg out (of course I do that at both ends, the 'blowing into end' hole doesn't have to be really big). I also push the screwdriver into the egg to break the yolk for an easier exit. Good luck and maybe this will help someone with their projects.

Dawn...try a 12 to 20 cc syringe. I would never be able to put my mouth on a raw egg.

The syringes make quick work of drawing the egg out.

Thanks for the suggestion--I'll have to see if I have one in the barn....but, for the record, I have NEVER gotten raw egg in/on my mouth...(yuk I agree)....hence the blowing of the eggs contents, not the sucking:D I punch a hole in one end, then the other (keep a finger over the first hole), then if needed, wash off one end, and turn into a blowhard, making sure no one from my family is nearby or they would probably take a picture on a phone or something and humiliate me without hesitation...but I'll try your idea and see what works best. Thanks again.

Hi Guys!! My daughter and I have been blowing our brains out with these eggs and have about three dozen by now! We have decorated most but have NOT done the modge podge stuff. I have some questions about this.

1. Do I have to use it?!?!?! The eggs look so nice I don't want to gunk them up. I got the kind in a bottle and haven't tried it yet.

2. If I DO have to use it what is the best way to apply it? I got the matte finish kind.

3. Does the modge podge gunk? If so is there a better alternative? I saw some sprays but didn't look very closely.

I got the super glue gel for the bead caps but my daughter decided to glue them all over the surface of the egg. It actually looked good but she used the entire little tube on two eggs and glued her fingers and got it in her eye. Enough with the super glue. I got some elmers craft glue today. I think it should work.

Thanks for the help. We'll be posting pics soon of the finished product.

ETA OK I read back a few pages and it looks like the foam brush is the way to go. Still would like to know if I HAVE to though!?!? I don't think I want them super shiny, but some shine would be ok. We did use some stickers that could be adhering better than they are.

As per blowing the eggs we have a strange system down. My husband found a little tool, looks like a drill bit but with a very sharp point. I'll ask him what it is called. We put a tiny pencil mark on the center of the top and bottom (we were sometimes quite a bit off center!) THen tap at the mark with this little tool. (I've also just used a steak knife, same effect just not as sharp a point) After about 5 small taps it makes a chip and you just keep tapping until it is big enough. Usually still quite small. Then we straightened out a paperclip and put it in to mix the yolk. Then take a bendy straw, put the long side in your mouth, the short side on the egg and blow. Takes maybe 4 minutes? I don't know. I think fresher eggs are easier but that may be because they were room temp, I didn't think of that. Then take it to the sink. Wash it off. Cover the bottom hole with your finger and fill the egg with some water. Cover the top hole and shake. Then I just put my mouth on the top and blow until the water is clear. I fill it with water 3 or 4 times. Seems to work although I am sure there are better ways!

Nice new pics all! The eggs are looking great!

Note to A dozen girls: I will give you $1,000,000 dollars if you tell me where you got the fillagree things on your last egg. I CAN"T FIND THEM ANYWHERE!!!! That is what got me started on this whole thing!

I dont use mod podge I spray seal all of mine. I would think you need to seal it with something or the glue of the rubon/stickers will dry and end up peeling off, also the sealer makes them more prone to resist water damage. I use both matte and gloss clear sparypaint, dries in 15 mins 2 or 3 coats and Im done in less than day with no brush marks.

As for the super glue I have my first two bottles and I have done over a 100 eggs at this point, but no need to get the lil one glued together!!!

looking foward to seeing your pictures

Thanks to all you BYC'ers and all your wonderful egg decorating tips and tricks. I made some of my very own.

I even blogged about it. http://www.newlyweds-blog.com/2010/12/10/egg-ornaments/

The
best trick I learned for blowing out the eggs is the syringe trick, no more blowing till your cheeks hurt, it was so simple, I even used the syringe needle to make the holes, on both ends.

I also used clear spray on sealer. I plan on giving lots out for Christmas. Thanks again for this thread!
