Blue Copper and Splash Copper Marans Discussion

Haha.... OK on the other thread since it is a black copper.

Another Question.... do you cull at hatch for coloration? I get about 1/2 with the better white markings... not as good as the one I was asking about but normal like your pink. I think Vicki does I am sure Don does. I would like to really improve quickly and if that would be a HUGE help I can do that.
I do cull carefully at hatch, usually selling the extras to backyard layer flocks and etc. Each mating will have a different priority, but overall, I rely heavily on my instincts. I have some I can cull right away, others I will wait a few weeks, because I want to be able to know for sure what will and won't work.

Funny, the best colored one I have found is the pink one.....not just because I like pink either, LOL, it just works better. Like it has more stick. The neon yellow and green are good too, but still they aren't as stiff or sticky as the pink.
The teal blue and the purple STINK out loud.

The black is the best here. Pink is pretty good now that you mention it. Cream stays on pretty well too. I know I don't really like the teal and green seems to fall off a lot. Blue seems ok and purple is ok. Maybe it is the brand. I have changed how I use the vet wrap and it helped but they still fall off. I find them in the litter all the time..... now I have toe punching as my back up when they fall off.

I just posted, hopefully they loaded alright, I can see them from my end

Thanks I saw them. Where do you get the elastic ones? I like those... I like them both. Do you know a specific name on them so I can look for them?
the elastics you can find on ebay under chick bands, you'll see the listings. The plastic spirals I get from Smith Poultry Supply out of Kansas. Terry is great and is very quick about shipping orders.

Since I do hatch A LOT of chicks.... I may pick the ones I think are best and get second opinions on the keepers. I really don't mind keeping 1 or 2 per hatch if that is what it takes. If my flock grows by a hand full of really good birds this year maybe next year it will grow by 2 hand fulls of really good birds.

What sizes? are they the same as the what pinkchick used #9 for pullet and #11 for older roos?
on the elastics they have a size chart on the listings, the other plastic ones are just for tiny birds. I have a lot of bands so I can fit to the birds as they age. Anywhere from a 9 to 11 on the hens and 11 to 14 on the males, depending on how big they are
