Blue Copper and Splash Copper Marans Discussion

Yes ,I know that splash x black = blue ,but will a splash marans carry the copper gene ? ,Example a splash marans rooster x a black jersey giant =a blue chick but will the chick have a copper hackle or not ?
Thanks, and sorry if I wasn't clear, hopefully you can help :)

Normally a splash copper marans rooster will carry the copper gene and will pass t down to his progeny.
But those days there is a lot black copper/ Blue copper and splash copper marans strain out there they produce a black /blue poulettes ( without a hackle).

to answer your question if your Splash copper rooster come from a correct strain ( there is a lot of a good strain in your country ) YiES he will add hackles to the girls if his is crossed to a ER varieties ( like Black /blue/Splash copper ) NOT the E/E varieties ( Solid black like the Australorp) need more than one crossing to put the hackles on the girls.

if was that easy than all the black copper and blue copper Breeders will have pullets with hackles.

look t the picture I posted of my Blue marans .the hackles is proven to be hard to put on the girls but I m gaining some slowly each year.

It s easy to work with a Black copper or a blue Copper /Blue wheaten Roosters .because you can see the amount of copper the rooster carry . But with a splash rooster you can t tell. drieving in the dark.

hope that help.

I have 4 Blue Copper roosters but only one is showing Copper. I think he is around 12 weeks old!

I have two Blue copper pullets but they are not showing copper. I also have 4 Black Copper pullets but only two have good copper. I am not sure what I am going to do yet! I would like to keep two of the Blue Copper roosters so I have a back up!

the first cockerel in the first photos is going to be your best one.he will have enough copper on him when adult.
the second one is too light and no much copper.

pullets without hackles that pretty normal in this day. tell we marans breeders start to breed pullets line from overly marked roosters ( dismissed by the standard ).

for me from this year on .I ll not breed from a Blue/Black copper rooster with a pure black/blue chest.

HAS to be spotted with copper plus the ears tuft coppery as well.

I thinks this roosters with a black chest are the cause for loosing the hackles on the girls.

I am glad that so far everyone is liking the rooster in the top picture best. I like the rooster in the top picture the best also. Not just because he is better in color and type but he is so friendly. Which is a plus for me! Having a beautiful mean rooster that ends up in a pot would not be so good.

I've been raising a group from a blue copper hatch.. There seems to be a lot of variation in the blues.. Is this really light one still a blue? (not a lavender?)

The light blue again and two splash:

(the other Marans in the picture are a mystery as well, if anyone has any clues! Buff colored hens and red roo.. Bought from breeder as lemon cuckoo)

My cute little feather footed splash roo.. Wish I could keep him!

Lastly, Blue Copper roo:
