Blue-Laced-Red ducklings! *PICS at last!*

I cant breed them tho, they are brothers and sisters. But I am going to try to find another saxony and breed it to my new rouen and then cross THOSE offspring with these. The mother of these is a rouen, and she has a funky pouch or ridge running down her chest all the way to her tail... and one of her daughters has it but not the other one. I dont like the look of it aestheically...I am going to try not using the daughter with the ridge in breeding to get rid of that trait.

Well as far as in-breeding vs. line-breeding...with our cattle herd we consider it LINE-breeding when father is bred to daughter, and mother to son. But its considered IN-breeding when the siblings are bred. I guess I was applying the same rules to my birds as DH uses with our angus...

What breed did you say those were? they look almost just like mine!!

Those are very pretty ducks!

I would be very interested in reading the line-breeding thread, if anyone can find it and post a link. I am going to need to know this stuff since I'm planning to breed... Also, recommendations on good poultry/duck breeding books & resources?

Thanks!

And thanks for the pics--they are gorgeous.

You can inbreed and line breed ducks, just as pretty much any animals as far as i know. I usually do *not* do it though for no good reason other than it creeps me out. It is a very useful tool though if you are trying to establish a rare variety or accentuate a positive trait.
