Blue/red Orps?? Genetics & possible projects?

rodriguez, your rite. A project is something someone willingly wants to do for the enjoyment of trying. What I described is work!
I built this pen in 3 hours Sat nite.
It was work, not a project.

I like the Examples.. It would make life to easy if they would wright like but it would be nice.
For the longest time I thought BC ment Black Cochin...

There are 14 colors of Orpington in the French Standard. I'm not sure about other colors. Many people find the colors we don't have in our American standard to be quite beautiful and enjoy the challenge of creating the color here. I am beginning to realize that there are others that think "projects" are Wrong & that's OK too.

In this case, I think the cockerel is a beautiful color combination. My intention was to have blue, black, splash & lavender orpingtons. Since I have this surprise color, I figured I could try to make the best use of it & see what I get.

Tim, Thanks again for the info on how this could have happened. I have some younger BBS Orp chicks from another breeder, so I'll make sure to keep them separate.

rodriguez, I do still have to install a 4' x 3' x 2' mini coop inside the pen. Even then, these DoDo's will still sleep on the ground.

More power to ya tgrlily. Yeah if the goal is to make a pretty bird, there are alot of gorgeous mutt birds. EE's are a very accepted & diversely colored line of mutt chickens. Again, I hope I am not offending anyone, it just seems in the last three days I read, here on BYC, the same thing about 5 or 6 times. Someone wants to create a NEW variety of chicken. It appears like alot of people have great ideas for new colors. Some here are just trying to keep the existing varieties healthy.
It would be cheaper, easier to just import birds from the UK. Pay the Customs, quarritine all that stuff then rasing a dozen generations of Orpingtons. And you may never achieve your goal by then either. And you should be prepared to breed ALOT of birds to get the same end result. OR you will just create a very small gene pool for all to play with as your project.
Any way you do it tgrlily, you better have a deep wallet. Even to be worth the time, your NEW breed of Orpington will have to meet a standard to be shown. Right now in the USA there are Black, Buff, Blue and White as recognized varieties Orpingtons.

Actually without projects of this sort, many color varieties would have never been developed. This is the natural progression of development. I couldn't imagine telling the originator of buff orpington to not develop the buff color.

As far as limited gene pool. All projects start somewhere. How far people take it is up to them and others interested in breeding that color variety. I would hope anyone working on a project would share it with others to encourage additional development and crossings to keep the gene pool varied. If people buy into a project and have no goal in continuing the development, it really becomes worthless. But if everyone works together with a common goal, it can be a valuable thing for the breed. jmho

hinkjc, didn't Charlie say,you guys make no real profits with your Lav project?
My point is more to the dedication aspects of creating a new breed. You guys have the support of the BYC community. I am sure you know without their help, like you just wrote, you need to come together, or it wouldn't happen.
Now when you add another 5 or 10 new projects on this site every week. I think ALL PROJECTS loose out. You loose some of those who have the energy to make your dream project become reality. tgrlily only gets a handful of diehards to make her project work. For the money, I would think payin to import birds then going from there will get you to where you want faster and cheaper. At least IF you are someone like tgrlily, who does not have the following like you guys.
