Hi All, our little blue silkie chick was hatched 4/20 and is 4 weeks old, purchased at a feed store. She is clearly a runt and growing and feathering at an extremely slow pace, in the beginning I had to keep her warmer and feed her extra on the side. But my question is on her feathers, do I need to give it more time, or is it pretty clear she has more hard feathers than silkied? Is she actually a satin? Also, will she always be itty bitty?

She is silkied. Often the wing feathers are more smooth than the feathers of the rest of the body on a silkied bird, but you can see the characteristic silkied fraying on them in the pictures you posted. The rest of the body should be more like her tail, fuzzy and fluffy.

As for the size, it depends. If she's struggled, she may just be delayed in growth and might catch up later. Or, she may just end up being a smaller Silkie. Time will tell. 🙂

Thank you for the explanation, this is only our second silkie and the other one had so many other quirks I didn’t really pay attention to how his feathers came in, and started to wonder on this one if she wasn’t silkied. I’m excited she’s finally starting to show some growth but I was pretty worried the first week or two we brought her home.
