Well, what do you know...GJENSEN and I live in the same town. He and his son came over today, and we had a nice visit. I handed him a broody 7 month old pullet. He agreed..."Big bird ". Lots of the old girls in disarray, but he said he liked them. I want to see his New Hamps next. Those tails look good in his photos. Nice to find a large fowl guy in this desert of OEGB breeders !

He's got the German birds.I'm looking forward to seeing those. His young son won over my hard case Aussie too, but the princess Japanese Chin child remained aloof, and on her pedestal posing.Maybe next time.

He also told me that Pastor Romig had gotten him his Catalanas. Geoge said he has been very helpful.

I believe it is due to the large chicken industry here. I had always heard that Bo Pilgrim was involved in getting laws passed that prevented some companies from moving into the state. And yes it is a VERY INTERESTING state.

Hi,
Finally got all the chicks out of the brooders and into grow out pens. Whew! Now we are working on a larger grow out pen for the last 6. Have 18 in all. 3 from March and 15 from May. (March and May are the hen's names. The female in my avatar is March at 10 mos., Hatched 3/12). March is still sitting on nothing. She's been at it for 2 weeks now. I wonder if I gave her several of Mays' eggs, if she would hatch them out? Or If I need to broody break her first and then sit her on eggs. That hen is a sitting fool, smile
Got a couple of misplaced feathers on wing on a couple of March's get. Not quite sure what is going on there. They're still in juvenile feathering. The cockerel looks good, except for the wing feather, same for his sister. The cockerel is looking nice and leggy at this age. Glad to see that. Outram or Sharpe (forget which) says that, if leggy at this age, the cockerel will settle down his body on his chassis just right when mature. The wings on the other sister look real nice.
Best,
Karen

The Encyclopaedia of the Poultry Yard
By Vero Kimball Shaw
Page 42-43: , " Crooked Toes usually result from chickens being kept on a hard floor when very young and before their toes become hard. As a result the middle one sometimes gets injured and ceases to be straight as it should be, thereby permanently disfiguring the bird, as there is no cure for crooked toes.".
Shaw should have stayed in poultry. He moved on to the dog world and became quite famous Eventually, was basically "kicked out" over a dog scandal of some kind.
Best,
Karen

Giving her eggs might be the best way to break her broodiness, actually - hatching eggs and raising chicks is sometimes the only way to get one to break. Your March might be one of those girls.

That's probably true. And it is an interesting state. Texas is quite different from other states in many ways. And by no means has the most lax gun laws. There are other states that are even more pro gun but Texas has the rep for it.
