Just want to say that with a creep feeder, DO have the slats close enough together that the big ones can't get it. Don't make it "low enough" so the big ones can't get in, because they can and will scoot under something you'd swear they never could. It's funny to watch but again, make openings narrow, not short.

I am not sure if this is a normal behavior but, my 5 mos. old cockerel is offering food to me. When ever I am outside, both boys are like my little shadows, and the bigger one has gotten into the habit of trying to feed me with the goodies he finds. Well, this morning it was violet leaves. He tore off almost the whole plant. At first I thought I was mistaken but now I am sure.. He carries the food to me and drops it right on my feet or very near and starts clucking. Yesterday, when I was feeding treats to everyone, he was sitting on the bench with me which I ended up with his choice of seeds and nuts on my lap. He is the only one who is doing it. Is it a normal behavior? Is it part of growing up process?
So far, I did not see him feed any of the girls; actually, he competes for the treats rather than share.
I am terrified of worms, and slugs , and started to worry that he will drop one of those on my feet, and I will end up with a heart attack..

LOL! He's in love with you is all. Courting behavior.

Yep, he's thinking of you as a hen. LOL you are being courted for sure. Time to watch out unless the line is known to have very gentle roosters.

You're right there Sarah ! Lual, you need to refuse his treats. You're the Mother ; he's the chicken. Throw those goodies to the girls , and shove him in that direction. It's cute now , but it won't be in another month or so, when he latches onto your leg with his beak and spurs.

Quote: Hi,
I was reading an article about weather extremes in the US the other day. Very interesting. The meteorologists were saying for the last 2 years, the undulating polar jet stream was waving north and south in pattern extremes they had never seen before. They didn't think it was global warming. Just not sure what was causing it. But the polar jet stream was south when/where it should have been north. And north when/where it should have been south. We are having unusual weather here in western PA too. There is an upward surge of warm air from the Gulf which is holding our normal Polar jet stream west of the West Virginia Panhandle and in middle Ohio and pushing it north over Lake Erie and thru Buffalo. Consequently we are getting humidity in the morning and then afternoon rain showers/thunderstorms. Been this way for 2 weeks and for another 12 days. Very unusual.
Best,
Karen

Quote: I grew up in California. Lived all over it. I agree. I always thought of north of Frisco to Oregon border as wet woodlands; Frisco/Bay Area as Avant garde/liberal; Gold Rush Country (Sacto to Reno) as historic; The Big Valley as hot/agricultural, the Grapevine dividing it from L.A.; L.A. to Camp Pendleton as urban; Camp Pendleton to the border as a separate entity of truck farming/flower growing.

Karen

Thank you. She recommended I come to this thread to find out which breed is best for us! Well friends of ours had a broody hen who hatched out 2 babies 4 weeks ago. we took them last week. One is a rir/cuckoo maran mix and the other is a americauna/rir mix (who we believe is a roo and won't be able to keep.) Yesterday we went to visit a farm and came home with 2 black copper maran hens and 1 splash maran, all 6 week old hens, annnnnddddd 2 ducks! haha! Cayuga/pekin mixes at age 6 weeks!
