Ross Keith has excellent LF Cornish.

Walt

He has the best i have ever seen. The ones i have are suppose to be orginally from his stock but i dont know how far removed from his orginal birds they are. I would love to ad a few more from him to mix with the ones i have now.

Rohrs birds are Gorgeous. The Cockerel he had two years ago at Ohio was pure poetry--I offered him a lot of money for that birds but he wouldn't let him go...

If those were the ones I sold at Ohio (Red head in the Green Sweater). The pullets are a Keith roo over Heritage/Herring bred hens. If the cockerel has a the webbing punched out on the Left foot it is a Keith/Herring cross, if it has a toe punch on the right foot then it is pure Keith.

Should have some nice babies either way. Keep the males with the larger heads, and the hens that hit 6lbs at 5 months with the darkest lacing, and go buy a Cockrel from Rohrs at Ohio next year with a pale eye, a good head, deep body, with not a lot of red on his back--then you're really going to have something.

It's just so expensive to keep extras going into fall just in case someone wants some. The really big exhibition birds really need 6-8sq.ft. each to be active and keep moving. Of what I hatched this year, I kept 6 (2 cockerels and 4 hens) for myself and sold around 2 dozen. I kept 1 rooster and 1 hen from last years breeding group. So I'm wintering 8. This year is a double mating year--working on pattern.

I normally don't keep any extras past November, and don't have any birds available until August.

Best of luck with your Cornish!

Yep that was you that i got them from. I just want out and check the rooster feet, he doesnt have a distinct hole but it looks like there is some webbing missing on the right foot in between the middle toe and the outer toe. Who is the Herring that the hens are part from, I think you may have told me at the show but i dont remember.

So you think its better to keep a rooster with less red on him? I have talked to some people that think its better to keep roosters with more red on them.

I dont live all that far from Keith, maybe and hour to 90 minutes so i am going to try and get a few from him hopefully before the next Ohio National.

You are talking about the langshans, right? I dont have those 2 langshans anymore, i lost them to what i think was a neighbors dog attack about 2 years ago, I went out to feed one morning and they were gone, just a few white feathers and i later found a wing. I didnt have them all that long when i lost them, i got about 2 dozen eggs off of them and gave a dozen to a friend and i hatched a dozen my self. I had to move a year or so ago and i gave the ones i hatched to her also, She now has a decent size flock but She is not interested in showing so she lets me go and pick out some of the better birds to build my flock back up. I got the orginal pair from a local sale/swap, they came from a breeder that lives out towards Culpepper or Winchester VA but i dont know his name or where he got his orginal birds. He had some other nice birds like white favorolles, and Sumatras. If i ever see him again i will see if i can find out his name and out where is stock orginatted.

Yeah, the holes tear out and it just looks like the web is missing. If it's on his right then that's out of the birds I bought from Rohrs in 2009. The Herring is Ken Herring, probably more noted for is White cornish, but I got my first Darks from him. He has passed on since I got my birds.

The Herring Darks can be a little tricky to use, but the pattern marking is excellent when combined with other lines. The Heritage bred rooster (supposedly came from American Heritage Farm in KY) I used a couple years back threw a nice true black.

You should get pullets with a good mahogany from that cross. If they come out light, you could try a red backed roo--just be sure he's got green sheen on his neck and tail and not purple. I just had better luck keeping the dark mahogany that I like with the black backed roos.

I'd bug the pucky out of Keith If I was that close--Lucky you!

Hahahaha, no you don't! Hope all is well with your flock! Ya know what continues to amaze me is that these guys hardly eat any feed. They prefer to forage for most of their nutrition. It worries me. I make sure they have fresh feed and water every day, yet they forage vigorously and eat very little commercial feed. Do you have this same experience?

I have about 65 BR's running around the ranch. I give them a bucket of corn, a half of a bucket of oats, and three coffee cans of commerical feed. there is always feed at night so I know they are getting a what they need. We don't have snow here yet and the birds think its great. I don't know what they are going to do when it snows. I guess they will eat more feed.

What a shame...gorgeous birds! If you ever want to sell a dozen eggs or so...let me know. Especially if you can find out who the original breeder is.

Hello all - probably a silly question - but as far as Dominiques and BR's - other than the different comb - what differences show in the barring on the hens and roo's? Thanks

I will PM you when i have some available or if i can find who the orginal breeder was.
