Here are two males the top is a Dominique and the bottom is a Standard Breed Plymouth Rock Male. The difference in color is the shapness of the barring on the Barred Rock Standard Breed male and the Muddy white color of the Dominique also the width of the barring on the two differnet breeds. Also, notice the size the Dominique is a smaller large fowl and it has a rose comb not a single comb. The current most poplular barred chicken which are thousdands is the commerical barrred rock you get from hatcheries. These are breed for high egg production and are flock mated for high egg feritilty to hatch and sell chicks.
Hope this helps you. Both breeds are very rare. The barred rocks are moving up in popularity. Maybe by next year they will be more popular in the hands of back yarders than the white plymouth rock varity.
Does this help you.???
By the way many people call the producton barred rocks dominiquers. A old time saying which there is no such breed. The Dominique has a rose comb and is small but this is a name I hear at shows from visiters who say my grand ma use to have dominiquers like these.
