Here are two males the top is a Dominique and the bottom is a Standard Breed Plymouth Rock Male. The difference in color is the shapness of the barring on the Barred Rock Standard Breed male and the Muddy white color of the Dominique also the width of the barring on the two differnet breeds. Also, notice the size the Dominique is a smaller large fowl and it has a rose comb not a single comb. The current most poplular barred chicken which are thousdands is the commerical barrred rock you get from hatcheries. These are breed for high egg production and are flock mated for high egg feritilty to hatch and sell chicks.

Hope this helps you. Both breeds are very rare. The barred rocks are moving up in popularity. Maybe by next year they will be more popular in the hands of back yarders than the white plymouth rock varity.

Does this help you.???

By the way many people call the producton barred rocks dominiquers. A old time saying which there is no such breed. The Dominique has a rose comb and is small but this is a name I hear at shows from visiters who say my grand ma use to have dominiquers like these.

This helps immensely! So the hens will be about the same on width - coloration - etc? I realize they will be darker than the roo's correct? So it appears to me - no offense anyone - that the BR is sharper and a bit more attractive - in my eyes

Type in your google search engine Dominiques. There are many good pictures on thier. New York Reds had a Champion Row Dominque female on this site a few weeks ago then when you find a good Standard breed one save the picture in your computer than go look at one of Kathymo Barred Rock Females. There is a female sitting on a limb on one of these threads taken about six weeks ago and she has the nicest riggletts barring I have seen in a while. I just did not have the time to do it this moarning. One of these days we may have a web site that will have pictures of good colored barred rocks and dominques so you can look at them. I have asked Santa Clause if he could make one for me. He said he is working on it if I help ten more people get Standard Breed Chickens this year he will send it to me. So help me out there you back yard chicken people convert to the old stuff and tell him so I can get my wish. bob

Yep, I will be in the Modern Game Bantam rows most of the time for this show (It's the MGB National show). Probably wearing a bright green sweater (everybody seems to be able to find me when I wear it!).

Wish I had room for Langshans, and I would love to see your birds if you're up for a tour.

As for hens there different all way around also. The Large Fowl Standard bred Dominique is a medium size breed and is ruffly the same size as a Large Fowl Standard bred Leghorn.
If I remember right the Standard calls for the Dominique Roosters only being a pound larger and hens a 1/2 pound larger than a Large Fowl Standard bred Leghorn.
There is a 2 - 3 pound deference between a Standard bred Dominique and a Standard bred Barred Rock [The Barred Rock being the larger fowl]
Here is a picture of one of my Large Fowl Standard bred Dominique [sorry I don't have a picture of a Barred Rock to compare her with.
