Re: "Heritage" breeds. It seems to me (and Im sure someone will correct me if Im wrong) that there will be the vast majority of recognized breeds that can be considered Heritage. It would probably be a much shorter list naming the breeds that wouldnt qualify as "Heritage".

I would love it if the entire discussion turn over 180 degrees to the subject of what is not a heritage breed, and why ?
My idea of what is not, is the newer crosses for industry, and the foo foo chickens...the lavender and blue colorations that have been breed from what was a heritage breed.
Other than that, all chickens are heritage chickens from some place, not necessarily here, but from somewhere. No new ones have fallen from the sky lately, right ??
All the ones we have have been here for hundreds of years , right ? Only some crosses have happened and some bizarre colors have happened, but the original of all breeds is a heritage breed.
Happy Holidays all !

Some of the foo foo stuff has been around for a long time too. The blue in some breeds have been around almost since the breeds creation. I really like the SPPA list of breeds that are old/ rare becasue it includes all breeds not just ones that arent accepted to the APA.

Happy Holidaze again !
My foo foo birds, useless as the day is long except for thier calm beauty, and their ability to make you sit down and breath, and look. And relax.

Ralph was right some strains do better. My strain that I started with 22 years ago laid about 140 to 150 eggs per pullet year. I picked chicks that would mature faster each year and the egg laying went up. I got my white rocks to feather so fast they started to look small when they growed up but when I wieghed them they where a pound over standard weight. The reason the feather quality was not fluffy like a orpington or cochin but tight as a R I Red. My females would lay up to about 180- to 190 eggs in their pullet year. But more important I breed in vigor and longivity I had females that where four and five years old that looked like pullets. I had one hen this year that was about 7 years old and produced about five or six super chicks befor she died from the heat.

To get egg production you have to work on it. No strain is going to pump out 200 eggs or more per pullet year unless they come from a mail order outfit.

Hope this helps. I like a strain that matures fast and has great tails that are fully furnished on the males. I could only do this by selecting the chicks out of the brooder box as they feathered.

Nice breed of old time chickens. Also, a great dual purpose bird for meat and looks. bob

my opinion (just keep in mind it's usually worth less than 2 cents

) is:
the term heritage is thrown around so much it is pretty much meaningless.the real question i have is why does everybody take the ALBC definition as the law? (just a note i am a member of ALBC)
everyone needs to keep the breed/breeds they want and not worry so much about if it is a "heritage" breed.

there are alot of breeds out there that need help so future generations will have access to them - if they are on a list or not.

What happens if you say Heritage Standard Breed Poutlry. Such as White Face Black Spanish, Buff Leghorns, Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds, Black Minoricas, White Cochins, Blue Andulsions, all breeds that I just wrote down have maybe 75 to 100 birds left that are true to breed they may not score 90 points out of a hunderd by a judge but they are from the olden days of poultry. If the chicken, duck or goose is in this book he is Heritage as far as I can see. It seems folks want to add breeds that cam over here latter in the 1960s or 70s. These may not fit into this area. I am talking about the APA 1964 Standard of Perfection book if they are listed in this book or ones going to the 1900 they are heritage.

If they are standard breed birds and they come out of this standard they are Heritage. If they are breed and raised and sold by catalogs and feed strores these are commerical type birds and to me do not follow this kind of subject. A good breeder would take 20 years to take some of these birds and make them score 90 points out of a hundred.

I miss the old breeds just not enough people interested in keeping them going anymore. bob
