Halo, I had to smile when I read this post.....I bolded the parts...a message I heard in church many years ago mentioned the "I problem" many people have, and I always thought the naming of the the Iphone, Ipod, I etc was so appropriate based on that. People are just so into the "I" of it all!
And I think I fall into the "a little older" catagory since I'm in my 50s.
But, back to the "Heritage" part of all of this........ I read about and then joined the ALBC and wanted to help preserve a "heritage, historic, old" breed. I purchased some Silver Laced Wyandottes from a hatchery, because I loved the look of them, and joined the Wyandotte Breeders Association. Once I was more educated, I bought a trio from a breeder in Wisconsin. They are beautiful and I love them but realized the difficulty for a novice in breeding a quality Silver Laced bird. After losing one of my hens, I rehomed my rooster. I bought two more pullets this summer from the same breeder. They are with my hatchery SLW and everyone that sees them comments on the difference between the hatchery and breeder birds. I will continue to buy "culls" in Aug/Sept from this breeder. I don't plan to ever show or raise them but the breeder has a reason to "hold on to a couple he thinks could be something" and I get beautiful girls for my laying flock and broodies to raise chicks. If something ever happens to the breeders flock, I will have some of his bloodlines that he could start with again. Helping to preserve a breed may not have to mean raising them. Okay, sounds a bit like rambling so....

punky,
IMO, this is exactly why those words are meaningless. Where in the term 'heritage' is all purpose implied? I just don't see that at all.
Thus, I believe it would be in everyone's interest to throw those terms out and start over with more exactly defined terms.
For example,
'Post-Modern:' any and all breeds created after 1940
'Modern:' any and all breeds created from 1840-1940 (this roughly corresponds to the introduction of Poultry Shows until the advent of WWII)
'Pioneer:' any and all breeds created from 1600-1840
'?:' any and all breeds created from 400-1600
'Ancient:' any and all breeds existing by 400
In other words, why not utilize basic accepted nomeclature for time periods and apply that to the breeds created during that time? Of course, if it was desire to use the basic time periods with other names that would be fine too.
The one difference would be the period that includes the advent of the poultry shows.
WOW............................. for being one of the oldest breeds in the world the larger asil are sure hard to come by... idk if they would be considered usa heritage or not but i think its a real shame that they are so rare... ive been hunting for some for 2 years now...
What's interesting is that some folks from India found the picture of my birds (hellboys) on the web and then posted them as the 'ideal-old type' Asil! I thought it a real hoot.
The purpose of more exact language is at least 2 fold:
1. So that everyone is talking about the same thing.
2. It is vastly more important to save the original breeds that created all the 'modern' composites.
