My boys loved the movie "Hellboy."

This big old bird was more red as a younger bird: thus, the Hellboy. Since he wasn't truly a Kulang Asil, I felt it more honest to give the line a new name and say they are Kulang Asil type. So, Hellboys stuck.

Great post. All one has to do is look at posts on this site to see that most only want something "rare"....then they want ot mix it with something else. Generally they have no idea about how to maintain the quality of the birds and don't seem to have the time to learn about poultry in general. Many times these are the folks that are very dogmatic in their views. "Heritage" has been applied to turkeys out here in the west for several years now. It is used mostly to get a dollar a pound more for the dressed birds.

I think heritage is a boon to the poultry fancy in some ways. It has created more interest and an opportunity for those folks that do have knowledge to set the serious hobbyists on the right track. (I don't call many people "breeders". They have to earn that title with me. Hatching lots of birds does not make a breeder.)
BYC is an excellent place for those that know to teach and the serious hobbyists to learn.
Bob has been doing an excellent job of that and his way is non confrontational. Great job Bob!!!

Whatever we end up calling these old breeds is not important, what is important is that we keep them going.

Lavender....that is a whole other subject. So far I haven't had anyone convince me that the APA/ABA should change all the Self Blue varieties now in existence to lavender. Maybe I just haven't heard the right argument yet. Most of the arguments I have been in were with newbies who are very passionate about changing the variety to lavender, but not to savvy about color descriptions. The Standards are slow to change because history has shown us that down the road another group will want to change it back. I have had errors in the SOP pointed out that have been there for over 50 years and never questioned. The SOP will never be perfect, just as there are no perfect chickens.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I will take a chance and say yes. If you just throw chickens together to reproduce they will decline in quality and lose some of their purpose. (eggs/meat). That has been my experience.

I meant to say we should call them standard bred poultry instead of heritage.
