yup. In some anyway. I got a box of 25 PBR from Murray McMurray a years ago for my brother..he was just starting out and after a few weeks he changed his mind so I sold the pullets off, but those PBRs that Murray McMurray sells are Jumbo egg laying machines and just super pleasant birds. Their type looks pretty good, but the barring is not like the quality breed shown in the standard.
So they do have some qualities left, and egg production I think has been purposefully bred into hatchery birds, like Saladin said, some were not meant to lay alot.
But they would not be able to sell their birds if they did not lay gobs of giant eggs, that is what the hatcheries are all about= Give the consumer what they want, and what they want is eggs and meat.
We poultry conisours (sp?) are the ones who want the bird to be as the standard says, the general not knowing public just wants breakfast.

No hatchery ever had my Orientals, I can promise you that. They simply do not lay lots of eggs; at least some of the Orientals.

Did I misunderstand your post?

I just had a heart attack...I left a gate open and my Blue Copper Marans went through into the RIW pen, and a fight ensued, and I ran in to find 2 Marans hens and a mature roo kicking butt on my RIW cockeral...poor baby was wedged in between a 2x4 wall and a nest box in a size of a shoe box with his rear sticking out, crying !
I pulled him out and had to sit and stroke him and talk sweet to him he was crying and shaking and his heart pounding !
My fault!!

If I lost him I would be in deep nowhere, he is my only roo....
Poor baby. He is OK though, mostly just scared him.

Bob you make good points and as one breeder to another I can relate entirely.I think we owe the hen a few things.Your point about helping so many families survive the depression is very true and valid but also a pretty much forgotten fact.The flock could get by with a minimum where the cow,horse ,pig and sheep required much more grain etc. Another forgotten point is the hen helped mankind earlier in history when the plague was rampant,the hen was immune but not the cow ,horse and other livestock.

I have often stated that the Standard of Perfection is an outstanding book that many of the best breeders' minds went into, to make it a valuable work.The practical qualities outlined are too often ignored.It is just as much a part of the complete bird as beauty is.It is just as much a book for the breeder as it is the exhibitor.There are many editions of the American standard and any edition is better than none,so everyone should have at least one copy on their library shelf.
