about the leghorns I I just prefer the meatier birds I have my doubts that leghorns reach market weight in 16 weeks though.Again I have nothing against them and I am sure they are A nice breed

Re: "Heritage" breeds. It seems to me (and Im sure someone will correct me if Im wrong) that there will be the vast majority of recognized breeds that can be considered Heritage. It would probably be a much shorter list naming the breeds that wouldnt qualify as "Heritage".

I would love it if the entire discussion turn over 180 degrees to the subject of what is not a heritage breed, and why ?
My idea of what is not, is the newer crosses for industry, and the foo foo chickens...the lavender and blue colorations that have been breed from what was a heritage breed.
Other than that, all chickens are heritage chickens from some place, not necessarily here, but from somewhere. No new ones have fallen from the sky lately, right ??
All the ones we have have been here for hundreds of years , right ? Only some crosses have happened and some bizarre colors have happened, but the original of all breeds is a heritage breed.

Hope this helps. I like a strain that matures fast and has great tails that are fully furnished on the males. I could only do this by selecting the chicks out of the brooder box as they feathered.

my opinion (just keep in mind it's usually worth less than 2 cents

) is:
the term heritage is thrown around so much it is pretty much meaningless.the real question i have is why does everybody take the ALBC definition as the law? (just a note i am a member of ALBC)
everyone needs to keep the breed/breeds they want and not worry so much about if it is a "heritage" breed.

there are alot of breeds out there that need help so future generations will have access to them - if they are on a list or not.

I miss the old breeds just not enough people interested in keeping them going anymore. bob
