Nettie Metcalf - what kind of game she used in buckeyes!

punky

From my understanding Nettie Metcalf used Black Breasted Red in her breeding of the Buckeye.

And so the breed "Buckeyes " were born in the US of A !!!
THAT is a heritage heirloom TO ME!!!
But no misunderstanding that the red breasted game WAS here at the time, it was NOT created here.

It was brought here from another culture/country/ continent, regardless of the year.
WE United States citizens cannot claim that bird as 'ours', another culture of ancient peoples "created" that bird. And too bad it has not survived ?
Or does anyone have any ?

Never thought the Game was created here. Most of the breeds that make up our "Heritage breeds" were not bred here as a breed but used in the make up of our breeds.

they were not made here

correct draye...and where has Robert been ??

We ego - testical Americans think everything is ours, and that is so far from the truth.
But, we do have some breeds we have created here in this Nation.

I have many Mexicans that come to buy eggs and cull birds from me, and today a Laotian woman was here, and was so excited to see the Cochin...but they are not from 'her' country (how refreshing to not claim everything as theirs) and nearby stood my friend Mario (a mexican) and I said the Cochin is from asia, and China and he said "why you not have any Mexican Chickens?"
I have no idea that Mexico has it's 'own' chickens ??
Something to look into...and the Laotians would love to buy some of 'their' chickens.....

Like I said before...I cannot save the world.
But I can do my best for my own country...that's all I can do.

From my research and understanding:

Nettie Metcalf - Used a Red Malay that may have also been used in the RIR. Sadly, it is no longer known to exist. Description has it being closer to a cornish type than the current Malay.
She used a BBR Game of unknown breed it was the RIR that deffinately used Malays

Ralf Sturgen - how he bred such great BR? Started where he was and went from there. Hatched a lot and culled heavy!

People dont know if they have it because we dont know what kind of game it was, it could have been an OEG, an Aseel, or some others.
