For heat nothing beat my hatchery Partridge Rocks or my Dels I now have better Delawares I bought from a utility breeder they are just now starting to lay beautiful milk chocolate eggs and jumbo for baby pullets the rocks just have average sized eggs and they are lighter. I don't have much humidity but 110 for days it was awful and I figured I might lose some birds they did just fine the Dels liked to go wading and spent many hours in the shallow water pans I put out. My breeder ones laid a week or 2 later than hatchery ones but the eggs were bigger to start and the color is better I like deep brown. Mine are not show quality too much smut but the "barn" is there I can work on the paint job.....

The Paso show is in a couple weeks. I'm showing 30 birds there. Partridge Rocks are very nice birds.

I got an email from a fellow about two days ago who went to a show and could not find some of the rare birds he was looking for. The reason they are so rare. Not many people have these breeds that he was looking for. Then I asked him how did he decide on these breeds? He said he saw pictures of these birds in a Poultry Hatchery Catalog. He was going for the beauty of the perfect chicken from the artist in the chicken catalog. The problem is when he told me the breeds I don’t know anyone who has such a quality bird that could score even 90 points out of a hundred. What I mean once the birds are raised up to crowing and laying age they will not look anything like the pictures.

In Plymouth Rocks if you are looking for Partridge Large Fowl I only know about three breeders and these birds are good but no contest to say the Barreds or White Rock Large Fowl. Many people ask me for Columbian Large fowl and what we have in the USA is so so. There is a good strain in Canada that I know of and they look fantastic. How do we get them into the USA? You have to be patient and ask someone who knows folks who have these rare breeds. I type in to Goggle the Breed. Sometimes you can type in the breed and the club name. Then when you find the club you can email the club Sec. You can ask someone who has an APA year book to look in the book to see who shows these rare breeds. There are many ways to locate these rare breeds or colors that you may want. If you get a colored breed of birds and you are disapointed then you have to improve them and breed them up. If you still find them not to suit you get rid of them and try something esle.

Wyandotte’s eggs would be about 2 Oz. maybe large in size would be correct. A Large Fowl Red or Plymouth Rock would be 2 1/1oz. for example. You cannot make a chicken lay an egg bigger than they stain produces. If you have Mr. Foleys Silver Laced Wyandotte’s you have one of the finest strain of Wyandotte’s I have seen. They are good size, oval in shape and I like them. One of my friends got some from him last year.

My problem is I am a Rhode Island Red Guy. I live, breath and sleep Rhode Island Reds. It’s a passion to me. I also like Plymouth Rocks. I had White Rock Large Fowl for 20 years. When it comes to the other colors of Rocks all I can do is help you find them and I have articles written by expert breeders to help you breed the. When it comes to other rare Heart age breeds I can help you locate the best breeders as I have friends who I can email them who judge shows all over the country and they know who has the best stock in different breeds. Why they handle and see them as judges at the different shows. Walt Leonard also has contacts and as a judge knows what he has seen at the major shows. My request to you is be patient. You have to sometimes wait two to three years to get what you want with some breeds. If you don’t like this breed then get rid of them and find the ones that you like.

If you don’t want to breed by the Standard for breed shape or type that’s fine. If your birds start to lose the traits they are suppose to reveal they will. Do you know how many people try a breed and learn to master it.? About 1 out of 100 ever does become a very good breeder . If you want lots of good fast growing meat birds a Cornish Rock Cross is the way to go.
I am going to start raising Dark Cornish bantams. Why I always wanted to because I knew a guy named John Wonderlich. When I was waiting to get back into chickens for twenty years I would go to the meat section and grab a Cornish Game hen and think in my mind John Wonderlich. Thank goodness at age 40 I got my chance to have chickens again. I want them because they are pretty and they are good to eat and I can remember John Wonderlich who helped me when I was getting started.
Well keep the tread alive. If you are looking for a breed we can try to help you find it. Many of the members who have these breeds on this tread may be willing to send you ten started chicks from their flock. How do you send ten started rare chickens to your home? That’s another subject for another day. It’s easy. All you have to do is ask. Bob

This is an amazing thread! Exactly what I have been looking for......I am a 3rd generation dog breeder, my Grandfather, Mother and I have all bred, raised and handled many Best In Show dogs over the years....I am ready for a new challenge, and have been lurking around this forum for the past three years not saying very much at all, just trying to sit back, read and learn.....This thread has been like finding the Holy Grail. Thank you to Bob, Walt, Chris and many others who are making this thread SO valuable and chock full of great information for us students!

My wife has been showing Corgi's for over 25 years so I know a bit about dog showing. This is entirely different. The judge doesn't know who the owners are in a poultry show and you have to win over a lot more animals to have a champion. I think you will like it. It is also not necessary to show to have a good time with the birds.
I suggest that people go to at least one big show to check out the birds though. There is nothing like seeing great examples of the breeds.

Welcome to the wonderful world of poultry.

It wasn't, but it would still be protected if it wasn't so old. I can't imagine any problems, since I published it. Does it say Ajalon Printing anywhere?
It should, that was my company.

Walt

It does say Ajalon printing and of course, you're mentioned in the acknowledgements on the dedication page.

There should not be any problem copying this booklet. It needs to be available again.

Be prepared the long range forecast is for heat since we didn't get enough this summer we're going to get some now going to be 93 or so in San Luis Obispo today and over 80 at the coast I might get some more ripe tomatoes....
