These were breeds that served the purpose in different areas of the US or the world many, many years ago. The APA did not make these up. They were made to do well in whatever location they were originally bred. The SOP tells how they were originally made and why. The shape was the outcome of the various crosses.

Okay, here are some pictures. To see some more pictures of my rocks (more barreds, buffs, blues, etc,) visit the Rock thread on this forum.

Blue and black rock bantams. They of course, need work.

A male I hatched back in 2007. He is molting as you can sort of see the feathers at the bottom of the cage. I have him again now and will be used in breeding.

a few of my blue andalusian pullets. Not the best pictures, but they are nice birds.

I found my book of Ralph's. I can't even find a copyright on it anywhere.

It wasn't, but it would still be protected if it wasn't so old. I can't imagine any problems, since I published it. Does it say Ajalon Printing anywhere?
It should, that was my company.

Back when these breeds were still in the "makings" each breeder or group of breeders had there own idea on what the ideal bird should look like and still serve the purpose that they needed it to do and that is what they bred for.

If all the breeders had the same idea of what the the ideal bird should look like then the poultry world would be real boring becouse all the birds would look the same..

I made it - - - I read All 28 pages. . . .

I've seen pictures on RIR (dark almost black RIR), Barred rocks, sumtras, Javas, . ... .

What's missing ? ? ?

How about some pictures on Speckled Sussex and Wyandottes -- - Heritage breeds, if course !

Post your pics - - PLEASE - - if you have some good looking specimens of these.

THANKS

By the way, I have a hatchery quality SLW. . . . She lays a medium size egg.

Do Heritage SLW lay LARGE or medium size eggs ? ? ?

Do the speckled sussex OR SLW lay good in the HEAT ? ? ?

I live in North Florida and some of my breeds really slacked off in the summer heat. MANY were panting HARD during our high temps of over 100 F. Poor girls, I babied them through the summer. There were some days that I dunked them in a bucket of water EARLY in the day so that they could handle the heat.

There MUST be a heritage breed that lays LARGE Eggs and can take MONTHS of temps of 100 F.

Any recommendations ? ?

I can answer one of your questions from one line's perspective. I have some pretty nice SLW from Backwoods poultry farm, they do not lay a very large egg. They lay very consistently but when I have some numbers and get things sorted out a bit I hope to work on eggs size as well.

They did quite well this summer when the temps got near 100 degrees, I had no issues. They do very well in the cold wiht the rose combs.

greathorse... that's where my SLW came from too! I live in the next town from him.... he doesn't have the SLW anymore... he moved them to Ron Pressley's... but that is just another town over in the other direction. I only got a pair breeding (and extra roos right now) and was thinking about trying to get at least one more hen. They do lay smaller eggs. BIG BIRDS, small eggs. lol
