The best thing to do would probably be to scan it and make it a PDF.

I don't have the software, hence my suggestion of a document. I agree scanning would be the better way to go.

I can take the booklet my our printer and have it done pretty cheap. I also plan to do a vido tour called Plymouth Rock Tour 2011. Got three members lines up for a 30 minute vidio and this will be a two hour DVD. I was thinking for you who are starving for ideas how to build pens we made a tape called Rhode Island Red Tour 2000 ten years ago. Its two hours long and is sold for about $20. we just got it from VCR to DVD. THis would be a good fund raiser for the Red Club and help you guys out. I am thinking of a new thread on how to get started but you guys on this message board may all ready have a tread on buildings and getting started from Scratch. The only way I can tell you is how I started twenty plus years ago. Also,I live in like Flordia type climate. If you live in the North you have to do things differently. Is there a thread on this site that shows different Poultry set ups or Poutlry Houses???
Got to run to work. bob

Here a very nice pen that was posted on another site (user minime). I believe the the person that posted them lived in the U.K. and I think it would make a nice "starter" pen for some on just starting out or the same idea but on a bigger scale would be nice for a breeding pen..

The SOP on most of the dual purpose/heavy breeds is written to make for a really good farm chicken. That's the idea right? So what about the folks who want a bird that meets the SOP because it would make a good farm chicken but doesn't plan to show? How does one go about finding a quality line of (insert breed here) to raise on our farm so we can keep our family in meat and eggs because the hatcheries are not producing that kind of bird in any breed but the broilers.

How does someone find those birds to get started with?

That's the question I have for the committee.

Not trying to be a pain in the arse but I think this is the place that my question would be best answered so I'll try to ask it more clearly.

I don't have much experience but I did/do enjoy reading about some of the 'heritage' breeds. I especially like Dominiques due to learning about them initially from the Colonial Williamsburg site I linked to earlier on their rare breeds livestock program.

I found that the various clubs for certain breeds often had websites with contacts and sometimes links to people who show the breed and are active in that kind of 'circle' of folks. I met a great guy when he came to the Tulsa Fair and we arranged for him to bring me a pair of his hens that he was willing to part with. That was some time ago and we no longer have those birds (unfortunately, they were really nice birds) but I would assume you could do something similar with a particular breed that interests you. Look for the clubs, shows etc and make some connections. Going to a show close to you some time should offer some leads.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes and I don't know for sure about permission to link to things but there are a lot of breed clubs and some 'breed conservancy' groups that you might look into.

Well I am uploading some pictures of my blues right now. I also have large buffs and columbians and partridges, and of course my barreds. I am having to start over with my silver pencileds but should have those again sometime this fall or early spring. I am going to dig Ralph's book out again. I just put it away last week after rereading it again for the umpteenth time. You mentioned other heritage breeds. I have quite a few that I would consider heritage, but to name a few I have andalusians, spanish, anconas and a few javas.

I have a question.

If the SOP is written with function in mind, why do most of the large dual-purpose breeds have different body types? All this talk about the brick, the gravy bowl, etc. What do these different types add to the equation, and effect function? Are these types simply aesthetic halmarks of the breeds, or should we be using these ideal body types to indicate the function of the breed, and therefore choose a breed that fits what we want?
