How is Bill doing? I haven't heard from him in years. Anything he raised was good.

Walt

Walt, Bill is getting ready to retire or maybe already has. He is like a lot of us not getting younger. He will be at Frankenmuth and I believe Ohio National.

OMG you all have really been talking. What a great thread so much in here will really help many looking to improve their breeding programs. One thing about breeding it is an ART forum that works with a live subject. Like any type of art it takes lots of study and lots of practice. You must love the breed you wish to work for to do it justice, for if you do not it will not work. Just like anything in life if you care enough you will put more into it.

I think in starting with chickens picking your first breed is very important. It will be the one you do the most learning on. How I did it was by making a list of what I wanted and what I did not want in my breed of choise. On my blog the one listed The Search tells some of this procedure. If you have no background in animals you will have alot more to learn than some of us. I would suggest a basic chickens book and a basic gentics book. Then read site like the ALBC resource pages and others listed here on this thread. One major thing do not get chicks before you have a coop and are set up for them. That happens too many times on this forum. I am guilty of the coop one as we got our done when chicks were 16 weeks old. But weather will mess with your plans sometimes.

I think many of the old book out of copyright should be reprinted. What a great money maker for breed clubs.

Don...will you be attending Frankenmuth? I'll be there picking up some birds from WI. I would really be honored to meet you.

I'm retired...finally. I would have continued at the university, but the CA budget is so messed up, I thought I would get out before I had to lay people off. Say hi to him for me. I will be judging at Columbus, so maybe I will see him there.

As previously mentioned, if the book is out of copyright, then maybe the Rock club could print some and use as a fundraiser, what do you think Bob? I have a copy of it.....
