Barring as in the Barred Rock is regular "clean" barring/ "stripes".
Cuckoo as in the Dominique is "fuzzy" and irregular barring/ "stripes".

Barring can refer to types of markings on a feather.
Barring can be clean and regular as in the Barred Rock or irregular as in the Dominique, Hollands and Cuckoo d'Anvers.

Here is a pic. that has some patterns of barring..

I refer to the difference in the two as barring being very distinct and bold, whereas the cuckoo is rather "smudgey" and difficult to distinguish the lines between black and white. Not sure if that's the best description, but as I said, I'm no good at putting it into words. I know them when I see them, though.

What breed has the fourth feather from the left, top row? I have never seen a white laced feather on a black (or dark grey?) bird - and would REALLY like to know where (or how) to get such a thing. It would (I think) look GREAT on Wyandottes as a counter-point to the Silver-Laced birds we presently have. Anyone? Anyone?

joletabey congratulations you started the 40th page on this thread today . Who would have thought we would have this many pages since September 19th.

I spent last night two hours returning emails and personal messages to you who wrote me. There is a big interest in Standard Breed Poultry on this thread and that’s exciting. I would hate to start a thread on Heritage Bantams. God knows how much of a hornets’ nest stir that would bring.

However, sometimes when you suggest a breed to someone they tell you the negative points of the breed such as in Rhode Island Reds. I suggested to a person that she should look into a strain of Mohawk Rhode Island Reds breed in Callahan Florida for the past 14 years and in the south since 1912. This strain does not think anything of the heat and humidity and they are very pretty, lay plenty of eggs and have good flesh on them to eat. The are the perfect dual purpose American Class Heritage breed of chickens for some one. She replied that she had heard the Rhode Island Red males are aggressive.

I have been told so many times by mothers that the Rhode Island Red Roosters attaché their young children.
The question always asked by me is where did you get them? The answer always is the Feed store or they came from a hatchery. The bum rap the Rhode Island Red roosters that are the old fashion style get is from the PRODUCTION RED ROOSTER. These guys can be as mean as a snake. I think it’s because of the leghorn blood put in to them in the 1930s causes this meanness. Maybe not all roosters do this but I have never heard of a Old Fashion style Rhode Island Red male doing this to a owner or to the owners children.

So when you want a breed that can handle the cold climates or the heat pick a strain that lives in the region you live in.
If you live in the Deep South like I do. Don’t expect hatchery chickens from Iowa or Texas to get happy in this heat and humidity. They are going to suffer. When someone asks me to locate a strain of chickens for them the first thing I ask is what state do you live in. Then I try to locate the breeder that lives in that region. Southern born and raised large fowl are not going to like living in Michigan and Michigan born and raised large fowl are going to suffer in the south with this heat and humidity.
Anyway, the lady that told me this bad rumor is correct. Hatchery Red males can be aggressive. If you still don’t want to breed the pedigree style bird because of this history that’s fine. I just wanted to defend the dark almost black Rhode Island Red he has always been a docile bird in the pen and in the show coop. If breed correctly they can be an enjoyable strain of chickens to own. Bob

I have experienced that myself, Bob. We had a production red rooster that was mean as ever. He tasted good though. Now, I have a pen with 10 Heritage RIR (and 2 Buckeyes) roosters in it, and all of them are complete gentlemen. Now, if I just knew which ones to keep! I still have to let them grow out a bit more to decide, I think.

I have a idea and I am not up to the smarts to figure out how to do it. I am sure there are some young minds who could help me out to learn how to do this.

How do you post a 60 second video on U Tube.

I suppose to have bought a new camera that is digital and takes videos and can be sent up to U tube in a blink of a eye. Help the old chicken man.

If we posted our vidios on U Tube then we could look at your birds live on the hoof and tell you which ones look the best and or to get rid of. bob

I will agree that Rhode Island Reds have gotten a bad rap over the years, and like you said it is do to the Production Reds.
Most people are quick to judge and they seem to think if it is a Big Red Chicken then it must be a Rhode Island Red and if one Rhods Island Red is mean then they all are.

I have never had a Heritage Rhode Island Red rooster that was mean or aggressive to children or adults as far as that go's. I have a 2 year old son and a 4 year old daughter that will get the pen and (try to pick up

) the Cockerels/ and Roosters and never had a problem with them and the Roosters.

Bob,
If you hadn't done it yet, you need to set up a YOUTUBE account. Then when you will see a homepage of sorts. On it on the lower right you will see
"MY VIDEOS" click on it and you will get prompted to downloading a video.
I am not too old 47, and it didn't take too long to get the hang of.

good luck and hope this helps

Here is one of my first vids I did
