The white rocks are Jeremy Woeppel's birds. I don't think he his home yet (computer access). His Barred Rocks did well, also. This laptop isn't letting me upload any more pictures - darn it.

Is the owner of the Champ requesting anonymity or is he holding out to see what is said first, do tell please? I figure I got a good idea who these ones belong to and figure your stock you brought home is very closely related to them too,LOL am I in the ball park here LOL I recognize them guys and I'm not even an expert (yet) LOL

ETA as a matter of fact I have that bird on the left picture up as a screen saver had it there since Friday as I took off the Halloween one and I was looking thru some pics I saw that white bird and said that is a good one for a model to stare at for a while and I too figured it was good Karma for him as I thought he might do very well at the show this weekend (intuition?) maybe or just knowing so? LOL

Hi folks, This is exactly what I am interested in and why I went looking for forums and found this site! I have Dark Brahmas that I want to breed to heritage standards with my program starting this coming spring. The Brahmas are a wonderful breed- huge and calm. I also got Blue-Laced-Red Wyandottes at the same time (two years ago) because I was interested in both and wanted to compare the two breeds and decide which I wanted to work with. They were beautiful, but the Brahmas are so pleasant to be around and easy to handle, I picked them to start me off. Any one else out there doing/want to do heritage breeding?

This was all arranged ahead of time. I was just waiting for the show, to go pick them up.

Hey, I'm doing pretty well..... I joined that club you recommended ..... the12 step program. Nice little group we have.
I have reduced to just a few breeds.... Plymouth Rocks, New Hampshires, and Delawares. That's all !
The few other birds I have are purely ornamental (colored eggs, etc).... no plans to work on them.

You're doing better than I am then. I was down to 3 for about 6 months. Saw some really nice stock for sale at a couple of shows, a friend was getting out of Golden Campines, John Hayes retired from breeding Andalusians, etc, etc. Long story short I'm back up to 9. Wish I could follow my own advice but I'm weak.

Hey, Cedavid.

Hope you can make the ON. I went last year before I got chickens and it really was an eye opener. What Karen said - Finish your coop, load a couple pet carries or big plastic totes lined with shavings and bring a wad of cash. You'll have your coop stocked in no time. WARNING: Only bring as much money as you intend to spend. If you bring more, you'll spend it too. LOL.

Another important point - the earlier you get there, the better chance you'll have of getting what you want. There will be a bazillion people selling chickens off the backs of pickups, vans, and trucks, so get ready to be amazed by all the choices. That's why it's important to decide on a breed before you get there. Otherwise, you'll want "one of everything."

I'm hoping to make it next week. Look for the guy in the red American Buckeye Club t-shirt and the fedora and that's me.

I wish I could, but I have six kids 9 and under and my hubby has to work that weekend. I'll have to start planning to make it for next year. I do know that I am very interested in Buckeyes, Australorps, and Brahmas. I'm thinking that I'll get some egg layers from the hatchery this spring to get my feet wet with and than maybe add some of the aforementioned breeds from breeders next fall. Thanks for the encouragement! Everyone on this forum seems so friendly and helpful. I'm loving spending time on here learning as much as I can.

You have found the right place. Bob and many others are very helpful. Lots of information here and advice from experienced folks. You'll have some answers in no time. ANd if you need more stock, ask and someone might know a good source.

Yeah, the ON is not a place for kids. For more than about 20 minutes. I took my son last year and two hours was just enough for me to get a taste and him to be bored to tears. And he was 12. Can't imagine little ones wanting to hang around that long.

For egg layers I'd recommend Golden comets, Golden buff, Red sex-link, or whatever it is that they sell near you. If you're in Ohio near a TSC, they usually get Golden comets from Mt. Healthy hatchery. They are reliable layers and my GC lays the biggest eggs of the flock. (Had six chicks to start with until the neighbor's dog came over and got them, half my Barred rocks and Buckeyes and all my turkeys. No 4-H this year.) They're calm chickens, don't cause any problems and look nice in the yard. If all I wanted to do was raise eggs, I'd probably have mostly Golden comets or Golden buffs from Meyer up in Polk, OH.

If you want Heritage birds that lay slightly smaller eggs, but just as dependable, I'd say go with a good line of Barred rocks or Buckeyes. Mine have been laying like clockwork since they started a couple months ago. Between the 4 laying Buckeyes, 2 BRs and the GC, I've been getting 7 eggs a day. This is my first year with chickens. We'd been raising market turkeys the last few years, so it's a little different having birds I have to winter over. If you want to read up on the Buckeye breed, the American Buckeye Club has a blog up here: http://americanbuckeyeclub.blogspot.com/ They also have a Breeder Directory so you can see if there is anyone near you raising Buckeyes.

Good luck.
