Here's a picture of an Asil. Are they a lot smaller than the Shamo, Walt?
There are different strains of Asil. Horst Schmudde classes them into 3 types: for sake of arguement you could call them small, medium and large. LOL.

Though built differently than a Shamo the large Asil are close to the height of a Shamo. If Malays are actually a subtype of Asil, (which Willem and others believe) then the answer would be: yes, there are Asil as tall as Shamo or taller. But, this would not be typical of the Asil as found in the States.

I vote Silkies all the way for 'natures incubators'.

No thanks. I guess if I could find LF that would be okay but the bigger the butt the better in this case so...

I have a Brahma here I keep hoping she will brood, the Ams who went broody for me last summer and I am looking into Muscovy ducks. I have heard over and over that they are good brooders. I have heard that OEGB are really good mothers but I don't need yet another pen to keep the peace here. Thank you all for the explanations. Of course, the imp in me now wants to know what IS a beginner bird.

Walt, I'm so glad you posted some pics - when you mentioned "the look" earlier, I was trying to visualize it - holy cow, what a stare down.

I find these birds just beautiful - there is something just so awfully "natural" looking about them to me. Way over my head to ever be able to do them justice, but I can understand having them around - I find them EXTREMELY handsome birds.

Lacy Blues - your Asil is a very nice looking bird as well. You know, there's something about the nice, tight feathering that is very appealing - you can really see the frame on them!

Haha, my sentiments exactly. Silkies are great birds to get peoples attention but not one of my favorites for sure. Just answering the question as far as what I see as good birds to use as Broodie's. Good ol artificial incubator for me, let the birds lay more eggs without the stress of setting on eggs and let me brood the chicks where I can keep an eye on them.

Here is the head that ended up on some of our heritage birds.........not quite this extreme, but Asils were a foundation stock as noted here.

Wow..that was interesting Walt. A new wrinkle on my brain..whenever I go to the shows, I think, I wonder where the Cornish got their funny face

It is to keep them from whacking each other. Same as old cockers used to do with their games. Lets you keep several males without having to use up a whole bunch of room in a pen.

How safe is it to use tethers. In other words if I wanted to take a few birds that I plan to show that have been in conditioning pens and let them out for a couple hours on a tether, would I be asking for trouble?
