Great discussion about definitions and different perspectives. Then it turned to insulting younger generations...the same people posters here are trying to get interested in established breeds? Miiight want to rethink tactics on that one.

Well, I am going to take some time off from the list today , hoping Bob or Walt will start a a new subject and File 13 this one ...because I agree with you.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by the point system, but the schedule of points that is listed in the Standards is indeed still used by a lot of judges today.
I watched a judging of Serama's at the Newnan, Ga show 2012.
They were using the point system there. The cards were posted with how many points the birds earned.
There were like 5 catergories that each bird was scored in and then the points were totaled. Highest total point won the catergory.

This style of judging is different from the APA style judging that I see for large fowl. In those cases, the judge places birds by comparing one to other..

In the previous judging with a score card, each bird is evaluated on an individual basis and is competeing against itself. In the previous judging, a breeder walks away with the knowledge of where its bird was weak and where it showed strong. The other system of judging, the system we see most often, gives the bird 100 points and starts deducting for faults. The downside of this system is that the breeder walks away with no idea how good their bird really is. A bird could win, being best of the 15 birds in the catergory, yet be full of faults - just not as full as the other 14 birds LOL... With the score card that I saw being used with the Seramas, the breeder KNEW how much he beat the competition by AND he knew where the bird was judged weak.

I, too, would love to see the score card make a come back. It just seems much more informative to the breeder.

Yes, I know what the point system was, as it was used previously. And that serama point system, well that's not used in official sanctioned shows. The statement was made that the point sytem is no longer used in this country, and I was seeking clarification, as it is misleading because good judges do indeed still use the scale of points when making their decisions.

Yep, being involved with education I basically agree with you as a whole but you are lumping some very intelligent and creative young minds into this lot. And that is wrong

Of course I have seen a 'general trend' towards a lack of respect for any formal education on here lately. Very sad, maybe try and mix the incredibly valuable experience here with that education and you just might be amazed at what could transpire.

I agree, it is wrong to lump everyone in the younger generation together.
It is also wrong to take a broad statement as a personal insult.

That said, it is also wrong to disregard experience as being different than education, as some have done on this thread as well as the Heritage RIR thread.

A personal insult might be suggesting someone is untruthful about their RC being as fertile as SC, because they read the opposite somewhere.
Just one of many examples.

Respect is a two way street.

This thread has gotten way off track from it original propose.

Continuing education is one reason why we have hosted a Meetup Seminar. Last year was an Incubation Seminar and this year will be
Poultry Breeding and Genetics in the Small Flock Meetup Seminar - Arkansas - January 12, 2013

Learn more about the Poultry Breeding and Genetics in the Small Flock Meetup Seminar at

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...flock-meetup-seminar-arkansas-january-12-2013

Watch the Incubation Seminar at https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/656836/january-incubation-seminar-meetup-video

We plan on videoing this seminar and making it available here on BYC as well.

We can all learn more. My great-granddad Kirby used to say that we can learn something new from anyone. If we speak to someone and not learn from them, go back and apologize for not listening well enough.

We may not all agree on here, but we can listen and learn from even a beginner.
