UV stabilized bird netting will practically NEVER rot under ground. Wire will. I use the netting folded double, then buried, under the runs.

Good suggestion! I was responding to the burrowing talent of the gopher. It is astounding.

ETA: Is the same bird netting sufficient for covering a run? Maybe the better way to ask is, has anyone who has used it this way found birds of prey attempting/succeeding at breaking through it to get to the chickens inside?

Regular bird netting is easy for racoons to tear. Heavy weight Gamebird netting is another matter.
If you bury regular bird netting, and put rocks over it around the run perimeter, the racoons seem to be unhappy about getting their paws cut.They assume, in their little racoon minds, that it is wire.
