On your Barred Hollands,
Is it solid Brown feathers or is it the Black Barring "bleaching" out from the sun?

If you got Buckeyes from Matt and David John ( Shady Lane Poultry ) they should be good. I believe that some of there Buckeye stock came from
Laura Haggarty. She is on here now and then under the user name Pathfinders and I think after Matt got flooded out a few years back she sent him some new stock.

Chris

Chris I will have the pictures up soon.

Yes, it is barred, but it is crossed by coarse irregular light and dark bars. Red or yellow is a DQ, but brown is not mentioned. Under the general DQ's it could be considered a foreign color. I have seen a brown cast on barred birds that have been exposed to a lot of direct sun or have "old" feathers. Old feathers are feathers that are ready to molt. Not necessarily right way, but they are shot. Look under the exposed feathers and see if the brown is absent in the protected feathers. If that is the case, it is just the effects of light.

I would like to add that I would not recommend anyone mixing there own feed from scratch unless you have a good idea of what you are doing, a good feed mill to by from and have some time on your hands.

I my self do not mix my own feed but I try to keep up on nutrition (you could call it a hobby).
The main reason I do not mix my feed is that is hard to find a mill that has what you will need to mix a complete feed for you poultry.

I will say that I do supplement my birds with a good grain mix and Black oil sun flower seed. More or less to "cut the protein in the feed and to add some fat to there diet.

Here is the Grain Mix -
Maintenance All Grain Pigeon Feed - 14% Protein - W/Corn
Contains: Canada Peas, Milo, Whole Wheat, Small Yellow Corn, Safflower Seed, Maple Peas, Flax, Brown Rice, Vetch, Buckwheat,
Oat Groats.
Crude Protein (min) 14.0% Crude Fat (min) 2.0% Crude Fiber (max) 9.0%

Black Oil Sunflower Seed -
15% protein - 32% fat/ oil - 3 1/2% of mineral salts - 28 to 30% of crude indigestible fiber.

From what I can see it looks more Gold (Red) than Brown.

If so then it might be that they have some Black Breasted Red/ Brown Red coloring in there background.
The color looks like a poor Crele pattern.

I guess what I need is to find out the charactistics of a Barred Holland. I am interested in saving them.

Pictures don't always tell the whole story. If the other barred birds I see are from the same batch (the ones with clear barring) then something is wrong with the ones with brown in them. The first female has brown in the hackle which tell me that there is some other color in that bird. The males look a little brassy (yellow) from the sun, but they are way too light in color and the barring is too indistinct. They don't look like they came from the same place.

The first and third pullet look like a crele color pattern.

I wonder if the are Barred Hollands or if they could be Sand Hill's Norwegian Jaerhon.
