Every time I see dogs like you have I think of the Heritage Poultry. I am a fellow who has adotped two resuuese dogs one German Shepard mix and a pure breed Pickinieze but when it comes to chickens I want the real thing. pretty dogs.bob

Bob,

Jim Herald was over in Germany while in the Army. He said the Army brought many back. When I got these two I had a choice of the newer so called Stacked back. The look you see at Westminster, the look since 1925. My old dogs were the pre stacked back look. Jim told me he only knew of two breeders back then when he got his who still had this style in Germany. Just like our Orpingtons, we now have nearly two totally different breeds of GSD's.
okay I will not say anymore about dogs, other then one of mine helping me tree a coon the other nite. No more coon. lolol

Wouldn't a bird good enough to show be worth taking a chance on in the breeding pen? What am I missing here?

I have followed this thread fairly closely but wouldn't swear I've read every post. Has someone suggested that you shouldn't breed from [I hate this term] "Show Quality" stock?
If that's the case I've been doing it wrong for a long time. I don't show every bird I breed from as some birds have a role in the breeding pen even though they lack something that would make them appropriate for show. However, I do breed from every bird that I show. Those birds obviously have the characteristics I'm looking for.
If I were you, and I'm assuming Delawares are a new breed to you, I'd buy the best birds I could find & afford. While someone with years of experience with Delawares might be able to see something they could use in a a bird they wouldn't show a newcomer to a breed couldn't reasonably be expected to be able to do that.
There are no guarantees in breeding poultry or anything else but starting with the best you can get is generally a safe bet.

I like the middle dog. I bet your Shepherds don't have the hip problems that the current fad dogs do.

I recently purchased a trio of Silver Laced Wyandottes from Rick Hare. When I spoke to him on the phone, he asked me if I wanted "breeders or show birds." As it was not my choice, the birds are my daughters, she picked the show birds.

Bill
That girl lived to be 13 1/2 years old. She was 81 lbs in that pic. Nice size with good temperment. They were great dogs. I did keep one of her pups. he too is a very good boy.

I've seen the whole flock & I've judged them several times. Awesome birds. I suspect the difference was $$$$ based on condition. I remember a pen of 80 of Rick's pullets any one of which could have been shown.
That said Rick certainly knows those birds & knows how to put together a breeding trio with a reasonable liklihood of success. that's a little different than someone who doesn't have experience with the breed. For them I still say buy the best you can afford.
