I certainly apologize for posting anything at all then on this thread. The title said "Official Heritage Large Fowl Threade" and I assumed that is what it meant.

Again my apologies.

I am sorry if I sounded cross or sick I was. Some times these treads wonder off and so many die becasue they get off the subject.

What we need to do his help these people learn how to raise these rare breeds of large fowl and then help them cull them. Feed prices is going to go up because the gas prices are going up do to not drilling out in my back yard in the gulf of mexico. That is going to make trasporation cost to go up. Feed may hit $14. a sack for me in six months. So we got to feed less to get the best. Will not be able to have so many do to costs.

I have a fellow who is going to call me for a list of breeds he wants to get. I dont know how many of these breeds he will get but some of them are not even worth fooling with
there are no breeders that have them and the hatceries just have cross breeds that dont even look like the breed. I guess they make thier list up by the pictures in the catalogs as they dont even have a Standard of Perfection or even subscribe to Poulty Press to see what is available.

Just for the heck of it how many of you get the Poultry Press each month?

Rhode island red
Rhode island white
Plymouth barred rock
Plymouth white rock
Delawares
New hampshire red (see they still think thier are reds. Must be looking a a hatchery catalog.)

Here is another email that just came in a few miniutes ago and thier list.

Delawares

Well got to go to the post office and see how much three Cornish Dark Games will cost to ship.

Does any one know who has good Black Mininrocas?

Got a email today from a lady who wants some of these?

Thanks bob

salatin, You have some very good insights that need to be shared. That experience in not exclusive to breed and can be helpful to all. I think Bob was just saying that the thread "started" as a way to get some that may be interested started on preserving the American Heritage breeds. What others, like yourself, have learned with their own breeds can be of help. I hope you will continue to share those insights with us.

You did nothing wrong and you where not the only person posting pictures of chickens from faraway places so I was not pointing towards you last night . I am sorry if I up set you it was not my intention to make anyone mad or blame someone for posting pictures of breeds that where not in my scope of Heritage fowl . When I get home it’s late and if I take some of these cold pills I loose judgment in what my brain wants to say.

Also, it may be that some of the requests for breeds that people want me to find for them are not in the scope of what i consider Heritage Breeds. This bugs the heck out of me why they want such breeds that no one even rasies except hathceries This term is very tricky as it’s like trying to go out in the winter and play on a pond that is frozen. Sometimes certain areas are thin and you can fall through. When I started this thread I knew I was walking on thin ice and may have some people see if differrently.

Some people have no idea what they really want. They are making pictures for us to look at of chickens that do not look like these pictures and even the super breeders do not have birds that look like these pictures. Yet these rare breeds like Partridge or Silver Penciled Rocks look so pretty but are so difficult to breed let alone find.

Overall, the demand has been very good for large fowl so far and I hope a year from now we will see allot of people with nice birds in their yards and pictures on this thread. I have to work on a improved list of breeders for the new folks who want these large fowl. Over 95 percent are looking for large fowl and about 5% want bantams. Interesting as most people in the past wanted bantams.

I took three Dark Cornish Bantams to the post office to ship and the little single nest box and the three bantams where $52.. If these where three large fowl it would have cost about $150 plus $50 for the big box. See why it is so hard to share large fowl with others or adult birds. I had a guy get two trios of Buff Rock Large Fowl two years ago and it cost him a total of $550. For box the birds and the shipping.

So if you pay someone say $100 to $135 for ten started large fowl chicks you are doing pretty good on your upstart expense. Eggs can cost you a good sub if you can get someone to sell you some and depending on the care at the post office you may get a fair hatch. Have a nice weekend. Got to go to work. Bob

The Urch-Turnland Poultry have eight varieties of exhibition Turkey poults and hatching eggs. They are Master Breeders of Turkeys. They also have over 100 varieties of Exhibition Heritage poultry, including chickens, bantams, Turkeys and waterfowl. Here is the price list.

See I was also may have been confused because I took "Official Heritage Large Fowl Thread" to mean the birds that are listed on the ALBC website. That of course was my mistake after reading through Bob's post. I am still new to this and my knowledge of chickens is limited to what I've read from books in the library. I'm just now breaking into the online world. I didn't realize that the ALBC worked with all livestock breeds, not just heritage ones.

I noticed the mention of Delawares earlier, but what about Phoenix, are they considered Heritage or no?

I contacted them a while ago about RIW and they finally e-mailed that "we will not be having RIW"
and the prices for other chicks was way off the prices on the list they sent me.
maybe I got an old list ?
