I get to see them before any of you!!!!

I volunteered to be her co-driver! 5 hour drive there + 1 hour loading + 5 hour drive back = at least 11 hours of talking chicken! Guess I better pack my SOP and laptop!

It is sooooo great to have a chicken partner. You 2 will have a ball I am sure. The few times I have been able to "get together" with another real live chicken lover I totally love it....LOL

Please forgive my ignorance, I am new to this breed but have a dozen eggs in the incubator now. Are all Dominiques the rose comb with a spike?

If you are asking this you need to buy the Standard of Perfection. It is a must have if you plan on breeding.

Yes, all Dominiques are Rose Comb with a spike. The Dominique is a cuckoo pattern, just a bit different then a barred Plymouth Rock. The cuckoo comes in several breeds. Including the Barred Hollands, OEG, Cochin etc. Some breeds are called cuckoo and some are calle Dominique. But only the Domingue is the breed named Dominique.
Ideal Poultry has a nice description of the Dominique:

https://secuservices.com/ideal/newideal/selectproduct.aspx?qty=1&ID=DS&Product=220

Dominiques are one of the oldest American breeds having been plentifully bred as edarly as 1820. They are a black and white barred bird with the females being slightly darker than the males. Because males are the homozygous sex, they have two barred alleles (BB) and are therefore lighter in color than the females, which are the heterogametic sex and have only one barred allele(B_). Many times customers who want Barred Plymouth Rocks ask for "Dominickers". Dominiques have rose combs, angular bodies and are smaller than Barred Rocks. They are excellent, efficient producers of brown eggs.

Standard weights at maturity are males-7 lbs. and hens-5 lbs.

I have to put an * on this....

Dominiques were originally bred with both rose comb and single comb, but when the barred plymouth rock (actually a Dominique cross originally) became popular, it was decided to make all single comb birds be called BRs and all rose comb birds Dominique. Most Dominique breeders were not so happy about this.

Additionally, the Dominique got so rare (especially by 1970) that many single comb birds were used to bring the numbers back up. I have not heard from a single Dominique breeder that they have 100% rose comb hatches. Keeping those single comb chicks is a matter of debate and something you should decide for yourself

SO if you have a verifiable (at least 3+ generations) Dominique hen and cock and you get single comb chicks from them, that's fine. The single comb is recessive, so it won't always show in every generation.

dominiquechicken.com is a wonderful resource, from Mr Mark Fields.

Also I've spent god knows how many hours googling "Dominique" for any book I can find. You will often find very interesting tidbits of info on them in books that actually were meant for other breeds...

I love reading poultry books anyway, so it works out well for me!
