Hey Everyone

Just got done reading through this thread. Great information. Lots of links saved and information pasted to a Word document. Thanks to all that have been contributing.

I've got a question about something that has been touched on a few times (Yellow House Farm) but has not really been discussed regarding flock size. Some of this is just me thinking out loud. I've seen that some people here and on other threads have 5, 10 or more breeds that they are working with. I'm curious as to how many individuals they have for each breed/variety. I know that many of these standard breeds/color variants are very rare; some are to the point where only hatcheries carry them. In these cases I would think a person's flock size would be very important as there would be few if any others to trade stock with that would be of acceptable quality. I've seen some estimates of primary flock sizes ranging from 50 (ALBC I think) to 150 birds. Obviously the larger your flock is the longer you can go without having to outcross, and of course these flock size estimates vary depending on assumptions of the ability to find quality outcross stock and breeding practices used. I've also read on this thread about old breeding lines that extend for decades.

I guess I'm asking a few questions.

To really make progress on a breed that needs significant work (think houdans) what would be a good estimate for a realistic breeding flock size (30, 40, 50 birds)? (obviously number of chicks hatched will be critical)
How many birds does it take to maintain/improve a breed for various lengths of time (say 10, 20, 30 years) without an outcross?
What are breeders' planned strategies for long term breeding? (flock size, outcross frequency, hatch size)

I realize this is a bit of a ramble and what seems to be a complicated issue now that I have typed it. I hope I'm not interrupting anything, and I appreciate any input.

I really like DuMor 's Show Poultry feed. They recommend hatch to the show. It is 22% protien with AMP .0125% and BMD 50. I have some chicks on it right now and last spring grew out some pullets. I never had such a nice looking set of pullets. I have to order it into my TSC store since they don't stock it.

So I'm looking at King feed and looks like they have a great number of selections. 2 developed fro ProAM - I guess that's exhibition feed?

At any rate I would like to start mine on turkey starter to 6 weeks, but worry about cocci. But I just read this on the website so maybe I don't need to supplement with amprol? What do you guys think - I'm just going to try to this brand of feed, I like al lthe natural extracts they balance in there

Then I'm looking for a good basic BREEDER formula - not exhibition I just want healthy heathly breeders. They don't get to free range but I supplement with lots of greens, veggies, alfalfa etc & Boss

If anyone has time to look at these links (they have product tags on there too) I'd love some feedback on what to switch them too. Currently I have them on Purina Layena plus with Jose Guerrero game bird mixed in for about 20%
