You guys have successfully won another person over to the heritage side.

I've been reading through this thread but so far I've not come across anyone with heritage leghorns. I checked out the Leghorn Club website but it seems incomplete. Does anyone here know of where I can purchase some nice heritage leghorn hatching eggs and have them shipped this coming spring? It seems like almost no one is willing to ship hatching eggs, not that I can blame them for that. I would be willing to consider almost any color variety. I want leghorns that have not been bred to be laying machines and that still have good genetics.

Any Leghorn breeder who is worth his salt is going to seriously offended if you ask him for birds which do not lay well. A Leghorn is nothing if not a good layer. We have lost so many of the production characteristics in so many of our breeds. Why would anyone want to intentionally try to promote regression of one of the few breeds which has not become ruined?

I do not want leghorns that do not lay well, I just don't want any that have been pushed to the limits as to what production they can take. I've had hatchery production birds and they lay like machines for a couple years then burn out. I want heritage leghorns that have not been bred to be at that point. Excuse me if I offended anyone, I certainly did not mean to. I decided on leghorns because they are good layers.

Here is a email addy for a breeder in your neck of the woods(Charleston, Ark) you can go get live birds instead of eggs

Did you inquire to see if he had sale birds?
He has hatching eggs for sale for $45 a dozen. This spring, when my hens go broody, I'll check to make sure he has extra eggs for sale and drive to Charleston to pick up a couple dozen. He ships eggs as well, so if something comes up I can have the eggs shipped and they'll be here in no time at all. I prefer hatching eggs since my bantams are going to go broody anyways.

Don Schrider breeds leghorns, not sure which ones, but not production types. Can you tell my ignorance here. LOL He is a master breeder of buckeyes so I know from talking to a "student" that he also has leghorns. If you want his email address, PM me and I will try to find it. He is happy to share contacts.

Here is a nice picture of a very rare breed of Buff Leghorns. Also this is a very nice magazine and it has the list of names of shows that should have some birds at that your might be looking for.

Another breed that some folks are trying to find is Black Minioricas only two breeders who have them and some are very pricey.

Danny Feathers in Poca City Oklahoma has a old line of White Leghorn large fowl that he has been breeding for over 20 years. Maybe you could meat him at a show some day and get some breeding stock. The Brown leghorns from Bates is a good line. I had some light browns from North Carolina about five years ago. They where very nice birds. Dont get hung up on how they lay. These guys dont breed for egg production just for type and show quality. I think you will get many eggs from them. bob
