Body Odor

This is for Lotsachicken - Definitely have your dog checked for thyroid problems. It is common in dachshunds and your mention of little hair and bald spots fits in with that. Dachshunds should not smell bad unless they roll in something. That's one of their positive traits - lack of "doggy odor" I've had many dachshunds since I was 5 years old and none of them have ever had general bad body odor even with very infrequent bathing and spending lots of time outdoors.

I'll definetely have his thyroid looked at. What are other symptoms..would it affect his ability to gain weight? He is on the thin side, but is a small dachshund. The vet wasn't concerned and said it was better for his back that he not be much heavier.

Okay, I just looked up the symptoms in dogs and I definetely think my guy has a thyroid problem. He has bald spots, becomes really cold with the slightest drop of temp, is smelly, and I've twice waken up to horrible bouts of unexplained diarrhea. I'll have the vet run some blood work and see what can be done about it.

I'm so glad I posted on this thread!
