bought feed from local mill - it's like powder!

Is this normal?

The girls have been getting crumbles before now, so was I surprised when I opened up the "pullet finisher" from the local mill. I figured it would look like ground grains, but something more "substantial".

Bah. Definitely not what I expected. It looks like yellow powder, like fine-ground cornmeal. It's supposed to have 20% protein, so it sounded like a good idea!

I mixed it with their crumbles and they seem to like it, but I'll be looking for a different supplier. Want to switch them over to pellets anyway when they start to lay.

Sounds like bugs got to it. I'd take it back. Unless it was a "mash" feed, which you're supposed to mix with water to the correct consistancy.

that sounds like fine ground grain to me.. bugs did not get to it..

I used to feed ground oats and corn exclusively and that was like fine dust..

I would not be too quick to give up on it..

Just got off the phone with the milling company. They said that the finely ground stuff was normal, bugs didn't get to it or anything. I'm just concerned the chicks will waste a lot of it by beaking it out of their feeder.

If I do feed it as a "mash", how do I do it? Once a day, twice a day? Doesn't it spoil quickly?

It sounds to me like cheap feed. The cheaper feed will contain a lot of dust.

you can feed it dry.. keep drinking water available at all times..

If you are going to mix it with water, do not mix more than they will eat in 15 or 20 minutes.. It will go sour if left in the pan..

you will have to wash your feeder between batches..

I fed my feed free choice.. that elimitated a big rush at the feeder

I was feeding 200 broilers..​

Let me clarify myself so there will be NO confusion. It has been MY experience with the feeds we can buy locally, that the cheaper feed DOES contain more dust than the high dollar feed. I know everybody doesn't have the exact same experiences, since we don't live in the exact same region, and are not able to buy the exact same feed. Hope that helps.
