Boy or girl? Brahma.

so i was sold this young one at 3 weeks of age definitely looked pullet, now everyone is telling me she's a roo?
I'm not sure, wings don't look right and i dont see saddle feathers? Age is about 11 weeks.

not a brahma? she's taller then my speckled sussex hen at 11 weeks, has heavy feathering on legs (matted a bit here do to walking through water dish) what else could she be? breeder only had brahmas on site.

What color? Many people who order chicks form hatchery have been mistaken for a breeder when they were in fact just reselling... maybe to let go of extra they had to order to meet a minimum.

Is that a pea comb? It's hard for me to make out. If it was straight I might say Cochin... but I don't think so. If it is Brahma.. it isn't bred to a standard color that I recognize.

Where are her saddle feathers though? I can't make out any at all... just slow coming in, being plucked by another, or possible parasites?

That's actually fairly light feathering on the legs and feet. Also Brahma should have yellow skin. That skin looks white to me. Check out heavy feathering in this pic..

I love a good mystery! I'm going with pullet based on feather color not having reds and comb and waddle being pink instead of red... noting that Brahma can be slow to mature and without saddle confirmation or seeing individual behavior It's a guess.

Good questions! I knew they wouldn't be show quality and I don't look for "sop coloring " i am part of abrahma group on another page and breeder came recommended but yeah I'm starting to wonder on "hatchery" stock.
Gonna look else where next time i think.

Definitely a peacomb. I had a hen i got from a neighbor who would rip out feathers off the babies and chase them till they would pass out, that hen is no longer with us and Toasted feathers finally started growing back once she left.


These guys are from same breeder, they were like a day old when I got them. They'll be 8 weeks on Monday. Salt is more white and pepper is the poof in back.

Ah, if they have parent birds... probably just not selecting to the SOP. In which case hatchery stock might be just as good. But many folks have differing goals with their flocks. It's nice to support locals when ya can. But agreed, I might look elsewhere in the future.

At least they are healthy!

Looks like a cockerel to me. I've no doubt its a Brahma, Splash Blue Red pattern.

I guess I'm gonna have to wait till feathers grow in or it crows
I'm hoping pullet though as i have two definite boys already i might need to get more girls or finally getting to making a boy pen

The darker red coming in on the wing bars is a male trait.
