Slow growth, reduced egg production (due to size. Like a Leghorn vs. a Cornish X. Bred for two different reasons and in two very different body shapes), heavy feathering and some people have issues with fertility, especially in areas of excessive heat.

I think those up North would have a better shot than those down South. I've always heard Northern birds are larger than Southern birds. Anyway, there are probably several reasons people do not raise them as much. The light color is pretty difficult in itself. You want a nice dark undercolor, but the dark undercolor can cause smuttiness on the top of the feather. As well as the lacing on the tail feathers. Just a difficult color. Buffs seem even less in the US.

It's not that they are not out there, they're just waiting to be found!

Found
a club I am joining tomorrow The American Brahma Club

These where the first birds I ever bought as a youth they where from McMurry. Sold them the next year and got the right Light Brahmas a great learning experience for me. Got Buff Brahma Bantams now but this is a great breed club who is fighting to keep their breed going. I have a link above to their newest newsletter and look at the light Brahmas on the bottom of the last page. If you want a grand old breed you can’t beat Brahmas. Need help finiding good ones send me a message and I will locate you some. If you want some from a mail order catalog that is fine to just get some.

There is a fellow in Calif who has nice Light Brahmas his name is Dave Anderson.

They are out there you just got to locate the folks who have them and will share them with you.

Thanks for the info. I think I will keep hunting. Does this Dave Anderson show? There is a show coming up in January that is a reasonable driving distance from us. How would I contact him?

First, what a GORGEOUS bird! (The little munchkin's a handsome fella, as well.)

dmiravalle: You do not live far from Sacramento. If hatchery chicks are OK with you, pretty much every feed store in Sacramento will have light brahma chicks in the spring (well, of those that carry chicks--check with Elverta Feed, Bradshaw Feed, and there's one in West Sacramento I can't remember the name of). I have a 4-month-old LB that I acquired from a fellow BYCer, who bought her as a day-old chick at a local feedstore. They're everywhere here.

We ultimately would like birds we can show, so I think if I can't find a good breeder here in Norcal, I will order eggs and hatch them out and try it that way. My kids love showing, but this the breed my family has decided fits our needs and I just love their temperment and looks.

We are also planning on attending the show in Stockton at the end of January.
