I stand corrected. Every LF light Brahma chick I have hatched has started out either white or yellow. I missed that this was a bantam. Sorry!

I was not trying to be ugly, just an observation. I tend to agree with Gary, I think the more quality lights, large or bantam, will show good undercolor at hatch. I am also starting to believe that female light chicks from quality lines are usually darker than males.

I saw this photo in the last Scanner!

Clare, your chicks look great!

Just wanted to correct/update an observation I thought I had made. I made the statement, " I am also starting to believe that female light chicks from quality lines are usually darker than males" On this years hatch records I made note of each chicks down color-light/med/dark. As many of my chicks have matured to an age I can positvely determine sex: there seems to be NO correlation of chick down color to sex.

Tim, I don't know if this is relevant, but the Light Neff bantams are feathering in MUCH slower that the Buff Neff bantams.

Clare, the buffs do feather in more quickly, Neff, Spence/Williams both. It is easier to tell sex in the lights earlier though. Light males are slower to feather in the saddle area, and the saddle feathers of males show black as soon as they come in. Light females feather sooner in the saddle area than males, and with solid white feathers. Buff male and female seem to feather in evenly, more quickly. They both feather the same in the saddle area AND the first male saddle feathers are solid buff. It takes longer to determine male and female in the buffs. That has been my experience anyway. Some of the lines I have not raised could be different. I can't say if this applies to anything other than BANTAM Light and Buff.

Tim

P.S. Hopefully you will get more females from the Neff eggs than you did from mine. You should be able to set up as many breedings as you like next spring.

OK.. so.. my 3 week old light babies.. any black in the saddle area means boy? How old are they when I can notice this difference? I did notice a huge difference in feathering speed in several of them. Let me know if there are certain picture angles that would help with determining the sex of the Lt Brahma's.

Does this chick have yellow legs? BTW, it looks to be a pullet.

Dan

Hi Dan. That is part of the reason I had major questions about this bird, its legs are darker. They definitely have a greyish tint to them. I kept thinking something was off with this bird. I got them from a breeder and she had really nice breeding pens, all breeds were separated with their own nice runs. I was wondering if it could be a mix but the breeder swears the birds never got mixed together.

My experience is with show quality bantam Lights and Buffs only. I am almost certain this would not help with hatchery large or bantam lights.
