How old are your birds and where did you get them? Any photos of your females? Don't know of any Large Dark breeders in La. Your birds heads look pretty good to me.

They are just short of 11 months. Believe it or not, they are just run of the mill hatchery birds. From Ideal. And they were actually packing peanuts. I have one with my hens & 3 in a separate pen. Most of them have been eatin.

They are very calm & laid back, none of them are aggressive towards me. I am very impressed with this breed. I am focusing on ducks right now, but I wouldn't mind getting a few from a breeder as a project. I really like be buffs and the lights a well.
Are there any non-standard colors out there?

New2thecoop, I have Darks from Ideal as well, and I was surprisingly impressed with how good they are for hatchery birds!

Non-standard colors are Gold, Silver, and Buff laced. use the new search feature above the top of the thread "search this thread" and put in Buff laced brahmas - trust me you will fall in love <3 but they cost a pretty penny!!

4 of my 5 hens come from Ideal and all of them are big like that girl, that one isn't even my biggest girl. my 5th hen is from hatched eggs and shes a tad smaller than the rest and has a more 'average' build than a brahma build.

My rooster is HUGE he is stocky and solid at about 13 lbs. he makes my other standards look small.

This big boy is the result of my buff brahma rooster and light brahma hen (all hatchery). I have several roosters from these parents. They all look like this and are huge (notice the cream color in hackles & saddle).

I am hoping for some advice. I recently got 3 buff Brahma hens from a friend a few months ago and I have absolutely fell in love. I really think I want this to be my main bird I raise. They are all are really sweet, lay lot of eggs and one is broody. I have been looking for a dual purpose breed that will also hatch and raise thier own young. Is this the right breed for me? Any breeders in western NC? Do you recommended ordering them from ideal? Thanks everyone!

If you like them that much, then of course they are the right breed for you. As far as buying from Ideal, if you are raising a flock for yourself, maybe selling a few baby's on Craigslist or the newspaper they would be fine. If you are trying to show, I'd suggest a breeder. Also Ideal is in Texas, you may find a hatchery that is closer so there will be less stress in shipping. I'm not sure about the breeders in your area, but I'm sure someone on this thread can help you with that... So all in all you just have decide the pourpose for your birds (enjoyment of a backyard flock, selling chicks, egg production, or showing. Either way you'll love your Brahmas no matter where they come from!

P.S. - maybe you can ask where your friend got the birds from, since you like the temperament of the birds you have.

There is someone in Denton NC i think that breeds and shows LF brahma, I know they mainly specialize in Lights, don't know if they have buffs or not. I will try to find their contact information if I can.

I agree with New2thecoop - it all depends on what you want them for, if you just want birds for layers/backyard pets - ideal is a great place to go, you can get your chicks sexed order a 25$ box of chicks (not 25 birds - like alot of hatcheries) + shipping (around 10$) and they have Light, Dark, and Buff.

if you want to show or be a breeder yourself, find a breeder either in the area or one who will ship day olds or started chicks in spring.
