hi all. i am new here, was doing a search about vulture hocks. i read up on the last few pages and if anyone has time - - can you tell me if vulture hocks are a problem for brahmas? as in, are they painful, do they cause limping, anything like that. i dont show, so i dont necessarily care about being DQ'd.
also, i was really hoping these guys were girls. but i am pretty sure they are in fact cockerels. they are both 5 months old. what do you think?

THANKS

You have cockerels.

Yes, they are boys. Vulture hocks are an excess of feathering on the legs. It is painless, but not desired in Brahmas in America.

thanks. that was my fear, but at least now i know and can go from there. as for the hocks, i think they look way cool and will just be careful about future generations.

Well the proper term is stags ( 5 to 11 month old male chickens ) .
"Stag" is a term used by people who fight chickens. It does not appear in the glossary of the "Bantam Standard" or "Standard Of Perfection". "Cockerel" is the correct term for a male chicken less than one year old. "Cock" male over one year. "Pullet" female less than one year. "Hen" female over one year.

Well where I found the term the one it was on cackle hatchery's website and what it said was male chicken between five and eleven months. Oh well I learn something new everyday.

I have seen some thing similar but cannot remember the name. You could post a pic on the the forum that best matches the topic with something like "what kind of chicken am I".
Also a great source of photos on individual breeds is Feathersite.com. When you get there click on the chicken and you can find every breed ever created by man.

thanks for that site, never been there. i figure these are just mutts, but they sure are adorable. :)

Here are some pictures I took of my bantam buff Brahmas today. The older chicks are from a John Neff trio and the younger chicks are from Darlene Hobbs lines.

How are they looking? I need an honest critique. I can take it!
